What do you guys wear at a photoshoot?
I know there are probably 2 schools of thought. I suscribe to the school that matches the title. I can't remember where I read that quote, but I've always liked it.
When I do a shoot, I always try to dress as comfortable as possible, and ensure I have as much mobility as possible. (You never know when you'll need to climb a tree for that perfect shot of a wedding party)
And further more, for those of you with established businesses, do you have a sort of uniform you wear?
I am contemplating getting sleeved, and sleeveless button up shirts with my logo embroidered on the sleeve or pocket or something. Part of me feels like that is starting to get "too commercial", so to speak. But at the same time, I'd appear a little more professional without feeling overdressed.
At a shoot, I will usually wear a pair of khaki cargo pants. Deep, wide pockets are very helpful for carrying things like a memory wallet and spare batteries. Sometimes if an event is more formal however, a pair of regular khakis and a button-up shirt are typical.
How do you respond to requests to wear a tux? I would not be comfortable at all shooting in a tux, and the photos would definately suffer. Not only would I be afraid of damaging it, they are also really hot and stuffy.
What is everyone's thoughts? I have a friend who wears very very expensive clothes all the time, including when he is taking photos. I don't shoot with him often, but on one occasion he was wearing his typical outfit worth 300-400$ (looked like something I could pick up at the Gap or something for 80$, however) and he was very obviously concerned with getting them dirty or damaged. How can you giev the focus deserved to your client when your mind is constantly on your clothing?
A girl I know also has this problem. She wears a dress when shooting at weddings. Like, a "sexy" low cut dress. It's ridiculous to me.
On another note, I've designed a really cool and functional "tux" that could be modified for a suit, as well, specifically for a photographer. I would buy one for myself if it existed. 99% chance I will never pursue getting it manufactured and sold, but I am curious anyways if people would buy a seemingly normal piece of "dress wear" that is also full of hidden functional bits geared towards a photographer.

In general I dress as much like a hobo as the situation will allow. However, if I hired a photographer for a wedding and he showed up in khaki pants with cargo pockets I would be on the phone immediately looking for a new photographer.

Photographer's Tux Vest
You need this.
The photographer has to balance fitting in with functionality. |

It all depends on the shoot... but generally as casually as the situation will allow.

Do they make that in a t-shirt? I think the functionality of a T-shirt with the style of a tuxedo would be great. A Tuxedo T with lense pockets. |

Hi ive only just started out as a photographer, but ive watched and been to many events with many professionals.
Personally i wear a pair of black trousers that are really stretchy and im not afraid of ruining them, and a black t-shirt or a top similar to this top
Most people in my company wear polo shirts with "Barkers Photographic" and "Photographer" plastered on them, but i prefer to just be comfortable. ive tried to do a wedding, dressed in a skirt and the photos did suffer. It was windy and i was try to crouch on the floor, take the photo and hold my skirt down trying to preserve my modesty!!!!!
I basically try to look smart, but do not hinder myself and never wear anything i would like to ruin! |

When shooting a wedding I will always wear a nice pair of trousers and a button-up shirt with a tie. This has never hindered me in any way, the only thing I try to look for in clothes is a soft soled shoe. Nothing worse than loud clicking when walking around a quiet church looking for the angles I need and want.

If I'm doing a shoot in our studio I'm usually pretty casual, but neat. When I'm doing a wedding I'm usually pants and a nice shirt but I don't wear ties! I always tell the client what I will be wearing. I always feel like I'm choking when I have a tie on so I tend to avoid them so I can be comfortable.

I love the tux vest idea. As a lady, it is even tougher, normally I wear a pant suit that has an elastic waist (so I can bend and move), but I am also in heels (low and confortable but still heels.)
I am also not professional. (btw)
