Oi.......:-/ |
We Christians take a different view of this statement in general, but there are those who often use the Bible (capital B, please) to prove points that the Bible was never intended to prove. Terrible contextualization, although I thought it was meant in humor. I hope I was right....
In other words, IMHO the Bible gives us PLENTY of information on how to deal with Rikki, but I'm pretty doggone sure that the beast and hellfire and brimstone has nothing at all to do with Rikki and this situation. Gawrsh.
I agree with yakatme. There's a TREMENDOUS need for this thread. What purpose can locking it accomplish? |

i agree with NOT locking the thread.
the sheer magnitude of what Rikki did and how it really did affect the entire site simply requires a single, solitary place for everyone to be able to share and vent.
in some ways, locking the thread would be no different than shutting the gates to Vatican City after the Pope passed..."sorry, but enough people have grieved, no room for anymore..."
this was a massive, serious event, and everyone deserves an opportunity to put in their two cents. if you've had enough, simply put the thread on "ignore" and move on. |

We could put all that in a book and call it
"Ghost Accounts, Recalculations and A Suspension Thrill"
and make a movie about it... and who knows, maybe wins an Oscar...
This threat is a lesson should stay open... it's a classic, it's a history...

I agree with the previous post (by skiprow).. we need this thread to stay for awhile..
but what IS interesting to me (without bringing the bible into it) is that his "friends" on here who were SO chatty with him in the forums, haven't said BOO on this thread (well one fotoman-person said one teeny comment) but they have all crawled back into the cracks it seems... typical

Comparing somebody getting too caught up in a digital camera site that they needed to cheat with shutting the gates of the Vatican city after the Pope died is sort of well...:-/
Doesn't that alone tell you something?
And it is only a massive event to rikki and the people who couldn't believe what most people know who have been here for years...
People get caught up in the competition and do things that seem silly in retrospect. |

Interesting post. Do his "friends" have to post something to validate themselves in your eyes? Seems to me that they're handling it just fine, not adding any fuel to this fire, and going about their business as they see fit.

But I am not describing this as a 'victimless crime' -- the site is the victim. If he had used the 'voting machine' as it has been called to single out an individual for low votes, that individual would also be a victim of the crime. But as it is you are assigning victims by looking back after the fact, when victims galore exist you can apply names to -- I am assigning victims during the fact when those you claim are victims were nameless individuals in a crowd and not singled out at all. |
You are being very pedantic we are all the victims, that is every individual member on this site that entered a competition in good faith and expected our fellow members to abide by the rules.
You can put a spin on it anyway you feel but that is up to you. |
It's also true that if things had been different, nothing much would have changed. Neither your life nor mine would be significantly different from what it is now. At the end of the day, this is a small thing in the context of your life. Big for the site, but small for us as individuals with lives much bigger than that. It's fine to be sad, disappointed, etc., but going on and on with the "off with his head" screaming bloody murder shtick is just too much. Enough with the yowling. I agree it's time to lock this thread.

I believe most all of Rikki's friends have spoken in this thread some many times. Either you didn't read the entire thread or your not sure who Rikki's friends are.

Disagree. I think the following post from earlier this morning is applicable.

The fact that there are this many pages is not a reason to lock this thread.
On the contrary. The fact that there are this many pages over a two day period proves tremendous interest in and a need for this thread (still).
Edit to add: There are still recent posts that start with something like "I just came across this thread..." A lot of people have yet to see this thread. |

A lot of Rikki's friends have commented here, I consider myself a friend of Rikki but I do not condone what he has done nor can I forgive him just yet but I will in time. Rikki certainly gave a lot of vibe to this place that is going to be hard to replace.
I also agree that this thread needs to be kept open it is part of the healing process some prefer to be more open and vocal and some prefer to be quite.
Another victim in this are all the young photographers on this site the children who looked up to Rikki, my son came home from school today and when I told him he was almost crying and that alone has had a big effect on me.

The thread is on topic, many community members still have not had the oppertunity to log in and read the announcement. Discussion continues and is staying civil. I understand that many of you have a "we just need to move on" feeling. Excellent.
In that event, you may chose to not read or reply to this thread. The final results of the recalcuations have not been completed, and it is also possible that SC is still completing some discussion related to this situation.
At 27000+ views, I'd argue that the thread has not run it's course just yet. :) |

you've misread my analogy...i was comparing 'locking the thread' to 'locking the gates'. if it suits you better, we could compare it to turning off the microphones at a public debate over a nuclear plant incident. the point is, when large numbers of people are affected, they all should have the right to voice their opinion. in your opinion, it may be silly and no big deal, but to most people weighing in on this thread, this is a HUGE deal, because it violates some of the basic tenets of this site that make DPC stand out from similar sites.
Originally posted by hokie: And it is only a massive event to rikki and the people who couldn't believe what most people know who have been here for years... |
sure...everyone has known about this type of thing...but this event didn't just pop a small bubble--it blew out the dam! 40-plus challenges?!? that IS massive, especially to those who participate that much.
Originally posted by hokie: People get caught up in the competition and do things that seem silly in retrospect. |
most definitely. |

Actually, I could link you to a lot of things that get a lot of views on the internet. That alone does not make a topic valuable.
The hamster dance video comes to mind.

That was an absurd comparison.
If you think the motivation to click on these two sites are the same, then go hang out with the hamster

Sure they have. Several of them have defended him quite staunchly.
I never developed fondness Rikki, he rubbed me the wrong way and i never saw the helpful friendly fellow that everyone else sees. But he must be damn charismatic to get that many friends to register and vote over such a prolonged period of time with no prompting.
When i first got interested in DPC, it consumed a lot of my time. My husband, who is very loving and supportive, joined to see what was holding so much of my attention. But as far as i know, he only visited the site a couple of times, and certainly hasn't been voting every week.

I did not compare this site to the hamster dance site.
I said that the number of views/popularity a particular topic recieves does not denote value by itself. That was in response to a person saying that this thread was valuable simply because of it's current popularity. |

Hokie, I was the one who said it, but I didn't leave it at that. A lot of DPC'ers may not have been on this site recently and are still discovering what happened. They probably would like the chance to spend their 2 cents and vent a little. |

I don't think reaching a conclusion is the point of this thread to be fair. |
