After posting a few pics in the "Let's see your guitar pics" thread, I went out in search of an artist at the recent fair, that played an instrument unlike any I have ever seen before. It was called a Chapman Stick, and the sound was amazing!
The music this artist made was simply incredible.
Pictured above, was Tom Griesgraber and he was playing a 12-string Chapman Stick
I highly suggest watching the video clips on this amazing instrument.
Just thought I would share. |

Wow! It's like playing bass and guitar at the same time! That's really cool! :)

Very cool portraits, Brad! Do you have any that show the rest of the instrument? I don't know that one.

Well, thanks for sharing, Brad. That's the first time I've seen it - certainly an intriguing instrument, and it sounds great. I wouldn't mind getting the CD (except for the hasle of ordering it etc. ;>þ) |

After listening to Tom in an open air stage at the local fair, I was hooked - his sound was absolutely amazing.
Everyone was sitting in the grass, just mesmerized.
(was also where I shot a whole bunch of my candids that day, as the whole mood was so mellow, I think everyone was in a trance)

I used to have one, but it was stolen along with a few other rare and interesting instruments I collect :-(
It's actually quite fun to play, the way the electronics work, is really innovative, too. It's like playing guitar or bass, only you never pick the strings. It is almost like playing a keyboard or piano in that it registers the sound easily and you can play a bass line and a melody at the same time.
Quite fun. I had the 12 string model and I loved it. Unfortunately at close to 3000$ it isn't as simple to just swing on down to the local music shop and pick one up.
I loooooove strange or unconventional instruments. I used to belong to a website that sort of, invented and created new and strange instruments and methods of playing them well. It started out really strong, but eventually degraded into something of a novelty site when people just started to make ridiculous things that did nothing and were just made of fruit or something.
If you have any other photos of interesting instruments please post them, I also collect images of them.

Sorry to hear that. The mood & sounds that they are capable of delivering are nothing short of amazing.
Beore July 4th, I had never seen one, nor heard of one.
A new journey has begun in my musical listening experiences.

Tony Levin, who has played with everyone (no really, everyone) was one of the first players of the stick. You can hear it on some of the Talking Heads stuff, and some of the Bowie stuff he was involved in, but to best effect in all the later King Crimson albums. Blue Man Group also have a stick player as part of their standard band.
