I was going to stay away from this whole thread, because the entire issue makes me sad - Rikki was one of my favorite photographers here. He was clearly talented, and he was an all around 'nice' guy.
I can't claim to know what his motivations or intents were in getting his friends to join DPC, and in sharing his pictures with him. But I hardly think that he qualifies for nefarious uber villian status. His photos were good enough to stand on their own merit, regardless of what votes his friends were giving them. He worked hard at his photogrpahy, and his photos showed it. I would agree that showing his friends his photos knowing they were voting showed poor judgement, and might be questionable ethically, but I don't think he's a horrible person. I'm sure we've all done a questionable thing or two sometime in our lives.
Rikki was a tremendous assest to this site, both in his participation on the forums, and in the quality of his photos. I, for one, will miss his presence here, regardless of what he may have done to sway scores in his direction.

After the first couple of days during the voting period in the Roads Challenge I kept questioning myself as to how I processed my image.

Well, I had violated the rules and I contacted SC immediately to have the entry DQ'd.

That entry would be, to this day, my highest placing in a challenge.

Bingo. Precisely on target. Yakatme, you have this little thing called "integrity."

I just went through something similar when I learned that the abstract food winner had been DQd for cloning out multiple reflections. I immediately submitted my Gold photo for validation because I was worried I'd done the same thing.

With integrity, you think about whether you've done the right thing, and you take steps to either ensure you have or to take responsibility for what you did wrong.

I think this is the biggest violation of the rules so far for dpc, and it took place over several months. Doesn't it deseve as much forum time as threads like "The Bar is Open" ?
08/01/2006 12:48:23 AM · #587
i guess so... it was a violation - argue it in court if you're going to contest the charges. i don't have too much time to waste. this thread, in my opinion, has gone on too long debating a clear violation, making assumptions, wasting server resources, irritating me, wasting many other peoples energy, for what, the benefit of the accused and convicted?

edit: i have no idea what thread you're reffering to. i might have been thinking about photographs.

Friends, DPCers, countrymen, lend me your ears;
I come to bury Rikki, not to praise him.
The evil that men do lives after them;
The good is oft interred with their bones.

He was my friend, faithful and just to me:
But many says he was ambitious;
And they are honourable men.

When that the newbies had processing issues, Rikki hath help;
Ambition should be made of sterner stuff.

O judgement! thou art fled to brutish beasts,
And men have lost their reason.

But yesterday the word of Rikki might
Have stood against the world; now lies he there,
And none so poor to do him reverence.

All apologies to Shakespear

eh, i am trying to point out how threads often get out of hand.

i logged on a couple times today, this was obviously the major discussion of the day, it disracted me from my normal photographic interets here, so i thought i would chime in, in an effort to end the distraction. am i wrong ?

Personally, when something really irks me, I simply ignore it.

that's a cop out. this is a community i generally enjoy. i also generally respect what other members have to say. in this case, as in a few others, i disagree with the importance of elongated discussion.

i wouldn't be doing my part as a community member, by not voicing my thoughts in this case.

edit: to add that this particular thread is in the 'administrator announcments' section. not your daily jibber jabber section.

Just found out about this and am quite suprised. No need to repeat since everything has been said but... a good time for the zen challenge. We all just need to take a breath, calm our mind, and focus on what is important...photography and supporting one another.

On the subject of forgiveness.

I have been bothered in reading this thread -- not only be the actions it announces, but by the many who state that forgiveness is not an option. This bothered me, but I didn't know why it bothered me. So I did what I always do when an unknown is bothersome -- I stepped back and looked it over. I've been looking it over the for better part of a day now and these are the bits of certainty I have found to pin the unknown down and make it better known.

---
Forgiveness is vital for any community.

A community with no path to forgiveness is left with only one way of punishing transgressors -- Death!

Without a means of attonement for transgressions the members of a community will rip each other apart for even the smallest offense.

This is no different than barbarity.

Forgiveness is vital for any community.

A community should provide a way to forgiveness.

The way to forgiveness may be long and difficult to walk, but should never be blocked completely.

The decision to walk the way to forgiveness is the trangressors, and the trangressors alone to make.
---

Rikki has transgressed against the site -- the site, not the individuals in it. Those in charge of the site have looked at the data -- data that we do not have, and probably never will have -- and have determined an appropriate punishment for the transgression. That is said and done, and as far as I am concerned is in the past and unimportant. Rikki is serving his sentence, and once it's done the trangression will have been settled.

After the sentence is served he as the option to attempt to regain the lost trust and gain forgiveness. That path will not be easy and I don't know if he will choose to walk it -- but the choice to attempt it is his and I for one am not willing to sink so low as to want to deny it from him.

The act of denying him the choice would be vindictive, not just.

The site is the individuals...otherwise, it's just a collection of text and graphics on a greyish background...never changing, never growing, never learning, never existing. The individuals drive this community, make it what it is, and it is therefor the individuals who were wronged here.

To say such a thing is just like saying Ken Ley transgressed against Enron -- Enron, not Enron's employees.

Could somebody just tell me in simple facts what he did to be banned? I know he cheated, but what did he actually do?

We're saddened to report the discovery of a disturbing case of mass buddy voting. We recently discovered that a member of the site had been distributing information about challenge entries to a group of over 30 individuals who had been encouraged to register for the site. Those individuals then artificially inflated the score of the user's challenge entries.

This is a serious abuse of voting and challenge integrity and has been going on for some time. Accordingly, the member has been banned from DPC for a period of 1 year, duplicate accounts have been locked, the affected entries have been DQ'd and the challenge results recalculated. A post will follow listing the affected challenges.

While it's understandable that family members or friends might know which entry is yours, attempts to influence their votes are not tolerated on this site.

We hope this serves as a warning to others, and that this never happens again. As always, if you know of or have reason to suspect any specific instances of cheating, please contact Site Council with any information you have. We take the integrity of the challenges very seriously. We have always thoroughly investigated any evidence or allegation of foul play, and will continue to do so.

While we welcome discussion of the issues at hand, please refrain from personal attacks while doing so. It is our hope that the user in question will learn an important lesson from this, and will return next year to participate in a fair, constructive and respectful manner.

Edit: Note that as of 12:08 on 7/31, the DQ/recalculate script is still running.

He is charged for attempting to sway votes using 30+ ghost accounts throughout the period of 40+ challenges (if I summed it correctly)

David-That's off the scale extreme. Somewhere between 50 lashes with a wet noodle and "DEATH" there are plenty of options for our community many of which don't slip into babarism.

The Ken Lay anology works perfectly so I won't add to that point.
