Just got off the phone with my editor...I may be covering a couple of the Padres home games this weekend. This is it!!! I'm in the middle of applying with the AP and now this... When it rains it pours. All I have to do is pull off the games and I'll be able to mention these in my port. WOW. I'm on cloud 8 (9 is where I'll be during the game) |

Figured it was something like that. Suppose it's like being asked to cover an All Black game!

Well, post game update...
My hair is definately turning gray now. I swear there are new shoots of gray since before the game.
I arrived early just to exercise my right to walk the infield with the pros and I must say it is a bit hard to describe the thrill. I am a LONG time baseball fan and for me to be on the field and be able to walk up to these guys and strike up conversation is in itself incredible to say the least. Putting all of my boy in wonderland aside it was a very hair raising event. The pressure is tremendous as is the competiton. I was tasked to the pitchers for the first couple of innings and appearantly that is also ever other photogs schedule. Petco Park only allows so many photogs to be at each shooting site and me being low man on the totum pole allowed the seasoned vets to push me around a bit. No big deal, my patience paid off and I managed some fairly incredible shots.
After the 3rd inning I spent most of my time bouncing between 1st and 3rd base pits looking for the "One shot" and agin my patience and knowledge of the game paid off big time. Before the game I noticed Craig Biggio seemed to be a bit stand offish and intense. The other players were all doing the usaul, signing autos and chatting between each other and fans. Craig seemed very intense and focused. I had a pretty good idea he was here to play to win (not taking anything from the other players, just more so him). I kept my eye on him through out the game and I managed to catch him crushing one of his two homeruns. The shot was beautiful. I'll get it up as soon as possible.
I managed some pretty awesome pics of both pitchers and one shot of centerfielder Mike Cameron leaping half way up center field wall to snatch Biggio's second homer. Yup the same homer I just cought. Two awesome shots off one hit. Well, the one of Cam could have been better but, I'll take it. Anyway just thought I'd share.
If anyone is planning on doing this I can give you this bit of advise.
P R E P E R A T I O N
Make sure you have everything and then realize you don't. I checked my gear probably ten times and still forgot what I thought was something so tiny. An ethernet cable. It all worked out but, It could have been MLB (MAJOR LEAGUE BUMMER)
I'd like to thank Skip. Skip I have been really watching your stuff lately and your starting to rub off. Thanks. |

nick, here's a couple thoughts for ya...
i'm pretty sure nikon has it's equivalent of canon's professional services program. you might want to check that out. canon's allows for equipment loaners, as well as priority service. you're probably at a point where you would qualify.
also, in addition to tearsheets, i also carry a handful of drymounted, matte-print 11x14s in my portfolio. your portfolio definitely has some stuff that would look great large!
keep it up! |
