I looked outside and saw great light, well I think its great light-- was around 8pm and the sun was getting low.

My question is, how do I take full advantage of this light scenerio?

I quickly grabbed my camera, and made sure there was no shadows, but still I dont think I took full advantage of the natural light..

Heres one straight from camera.......

Heres one I just did a little crop and sharpened.....

I know her strap is twisted, and her cheeks are kinda oily, but Im asking advice on how to get the most outta this natural light, any tips?

The color of the light looks good, but it may yet be a bit harsh (look at how sharp the shadows are). Some ideas:

1) Turn the subject 45 degrees to the lighting so that you get some light and shadow 3-D modeling of her face. This is much better than straight on lighting. However, it'll work better if the light isn't so harsh.

2) You could use a diffuser to soften things up a bit. Or, just wait a little bit longer and the light is bound to get softer.

3) You could use a reflector to fill in the shadows. You still want the 45-degree angle, you'll just soften the shadows by filling in the shadow side a bit.

4) Turn the subject around, expose for the sunset (when it gets to the really pretty colors) and then use either a reflector or fill flash to light the subject.

Anyway, there are a few ideas to play with...

You might consider using a white/gray card to set a custom white balance setting, though that may negate the effect you want.

Angling the subject to create depth is good, as is then using a reflector or diffused fill-flash to soften the shadows.
