I would like to add a TC-17E II teleconverter to my D70s and 70-200 2.8 VR combo. Can anyone confirm that AF works with that combo? The B&H site does not list the D70s as a camera that AF works with the TC-17E. If not, does the TC-14E maintain AF? Thanks

Yup, I can tell you from personal experience that it works. It's sweet. The TC-17E is a mighty fine teleconverter. I love what I can do with it. Good choice and good combo.

i am thinking of surpassing the 1.7 for a 2x, because of the VR function. Anyone with that one? And experience. I am sure it is fine, not that much longer than 1.7x. i think 1.7 is popular because it is a compromise of 1.4 and 2x. other than loss of stop, the quality should be same right?

From what I heard the 1.4x is sharpest, the 1.7x decent and the 2x noticeably soft.

I had the TC17e for almost two months and used it with the Nikon 70-200VR....AND HATED IT!

It was extremely soft and difficult to focus. I can't see focus very well in the D70 viewfinder in the first place and the results of autofocus were always disappointing.

I returned it almost two months later after trying various combinations of aperture and zoom. A couple months after that, I bought the Nikon 80-400VR and I'm very happy with it instead.
