I'm sure this may of been discussed a few times before but exactly what files do you save of your work? I'm trying to work out the best and most convenient way of storing our datafiles and we're sort of running at the moment by saving the RAW files, a .PSD file and a JPEG of each photo. This is a load of data to save so I'm sort of figuring to maybe only save the RAW and the .PSD files only, which ofcourse can be saved as JPEG's etc. I'm interested in hearing what procedure others are using so if you're willing to share it would be appreciated! Many thanks!

I usually only save the RAW and JPEG files. I rarely even save PSD intermediate files, unless I had to do extensive PS work on a photo.

I saev the RAW files in one directory, and the jpegs in another. I sometims save more than one .jpeg though the first edited veriosn with all my steps logged in the image info history, and another of whatever size I needed (such as for DPC, or Eyefetch, etc) |

Cool! I'm finding we're saving the PSD's which I like to have because it's easy to re-edit something if I want to change it but just the size of them is cumbersome. I usually have to split them across 2 DVD's to backup just from a standard portrait session! Weddings are another story! Then add the RAW files and it's easily up to 3 DVD's! I guess I'll just have to wear it if I want to keep them!

for DPC challenges:
* one folder, titled by the title of the photo I entered, including:
- the original RAW-file
- xmp-file
- psd-file
- web-file
- sometimes different sizes for other forums
for the rest:
* one folder, per assignment, titled by the name of the family or something like that, incl. date, including:
- one folder with all originals
- one folder with all psd-files
- one folder with all jpg files for prints
- one folder with web-files
edit to add:
all files on 2 external hard disks: one here at my place, one in the volt at my parents place. just to be sure.
control freak? nah! obsessed? you kidding me! ;-)

Yeah, but how often do you actually use them? :-) I like the idea of keeping the PSD's myself, but just not willing to sacrifice that much data space for them.

It's a good question. I may never use them again but I know I'd be peeved off if I wanted to change something and had to start from scratch. Sometimes I'm finding I have to modify something slightly when I print a photo. I know it can be done with just the JPEG but sometimes it's nice to go back to an adjustment layer and tweek it a bit! I tend not to keep much on my hard drives, it's normally all backed up on DVD-R. It's interesting to see other peoples methods though.

IF you turn on PhotoShop's logging feature it will store all editing steps for you. Granted you would still be starting from scratch, but at least you would have a recipe to follow.
Another option that I've been toying with is to start recording an action as the first step and stop recording as the final step. Then just save the action and if you need the .psd again it can be used to recreate it.

For the majority I will save ONLY the raw files, these images are usualy what I consider to be keepers, but not competition winners.
Maybe 1 or 2 shots in every hundred might make it to the Photoshop stage, where I will work them up to see if they are worth progressing. Some fall at this hurdle and remain stored as RAW only.
Maybe 2, possibly 3 out of these pass the PS stage and become DPC or PBASE submissions. These I will always store the PSD and the JPG.
Club competition entries will be scaled up to allow me to print A3 and saved again as a resized PSD.
Excelptionally, probably 5 images per year get the full tratment and may have several itterations of PSD, possibly as many as 10 or 12 variations, all saved as PSD and jpg. These are my National and International competition entries which I also have converted to traditional slide mounts and printed/mounted at A3.
