Regarding "The Corrosive Touch of Time".
Gedzundheit, DrAchoo, seems like you just about sneezed out your own
cynomaniac theory.
Most people, in general, probably like uplifting-happy-warm-tones.
DISCLAIMER: Except it depends on the mood the individual is in, what they had for breakfast, percent of alcohol consumed, and the age/health/gender of the person viewing the photo.
or maybe here is the correct secret formula.

I think the winner is usually the one that gets the highest votes. |

I only have problem with this classification
Landscape | Still life | Portrait
in stead of portrait you could have put people.
Because more than portaits , the shot of people with emotional touch do better. Example goodman, librodo.
When the viewer feel connection (may be emotional) he/she tends to vote high. I remeber around the time i joined dpc, someone got ribbon by shotting poor child from Calcutta (city in india). He later got disqualified due to some reasons. But it was just a simple photo (no post processing miracle), yet scored to win ribbon, just because of emotional touch to it. |

I've spent a couple of minutes looking over this thread and glancing at winning photos from challenges by checking the drop down menu at the challenge archive. I think you can generalize (which means there are exceptions) about the winning entries. They tend to: (A) be technically superior images (i.e. high quality), (B) have a high interest value (there is something inherently noteworthy about the subject matter or the way the subject is presented), and (C) the backgrounds are rarely cluttered. Undoubtedly there are other factors at work too - like talent, knowledge, insight, creativity, experience, humor, etc.
But speaking only of generalities...it's harder to ribbon with an ordinary subject, displayed with no sense of style with a bunch of "stuff" haphazardly within the frame. Flirting with DNMC is also a good way to lower your score. I know, I have entered a bunch of those and was awarded the mediocre scores they deserved.
Whether statistics can show anything in an arena where creativity has so much impact is debatable. However, when you make a better photo, you usually know it going in the door. The voters merely reaffirm what you already knew. When voters are rough...usually in all honesty you can re-evaluate your work after the fact and begin to pick it apart by comparing what the winning shots had that yours didn't and by listening to the comments made. (At least I can tell with my own work...which means I continue to work on my photos (gaining experience, knowledge, etc.)...and as I do my scores over time slowly rise. Not "every" time, but "over" time.)
Finally, the real reason I do this each week is because I am passionate about photography and have the desire and time to devote to it. It's just plain fun (whatever the statistics may say). |
