Hi all,

Two weeks ago I did a photo shoot with this lovely young lady. I work with her mother, and she wanted me to take a bunch of pictures to have for her own, but also to start a portfolio. She wants to get into modeling, and she will probably do well. Her attitude was excellent, and she was a joy to work with. I had her mom helping with hair and a little makeup, and her grandmother helped by making sure the wind didn't send my AB400 strobe into the next county! (I had a shoot-through umbrella on it, and it was windy). I know her braces kind of forced her into smiling one way, but they already want to do this again next year once her braces are off. Taylor has a lot to learn, but she was easy to direct, was very polite, and an overall joy to shoot. Please feel free to leave comments. Thanks and enjoy!

-Don

Shots look very good. This lighting is great (makes me want to get some Alienbee Strobes even more). She'll have a lot of potential and will look much better when she gets the braces off.

Excellent work, Don. You really captured the spirit of Taylor. That collection will start a very nice portfolio for her.

Thanks! You are right--the lighting in the pool shot (wet hair) is a little too hot. I had the strobe turned up a little much with that one. I switched to the 70-200mm lens, and I didn't move the AB back far enough. As far as squinting, I didn't really notice it. I'll be sure to watch out for that in the future, though. It was quite bright out.

And thanks for your kind words, Cindi. This is a sampling of what I took (3 hours, and over 230 shots), and I hope to put a little portfolio together for her. I'm still trying to determine what to charge for this shoot. It was (and still is) a lot of work, but they also gave me a model release so many of these will be in my stock portfolio as well. I'm not worried, though. I know her mom pretty well from my day job, and I know we will work out a fair deal. More comments are welcome, so lets here them!

Do you have any other shots posted? I would suggest when putting her portfolio together, that you put as many different "looks" in it as possible. Although the shots are very nice, most of them have basicly the same expression on her face... she will need a well rounded portfolio.

Sounds like it will work out OK in this case but generally I'd suggest working out what to charge, and getting the client to agree to it before starting the shoot. It can get messy otherwise, and if it doesn't work out well its worse with friends as you are risking the friendship too...

Definitely--I agree. If I didn't know her, I would have worked out all the details before taking a single shot. I'm (optimistically) thinking these will do well for stock, so I will hopefully make some ongoing cash out of this deal too. Either way, I'm happy with the way the shoot turned out, and I appreciate the comments. Keep 'em coming!

Oh yeah, and bump for the morning crowd. :o)

All very nice Don. I love that she's totally un-selfconscious about her braces and just SMILES! Good for her.

Q: Do you have the remote power pack for your ab's or did you run a drop cord? I'm considering buying the power pack and am interested in anyone's advice on the subject.

This back yard had AC outlets all over, so I just used extension cords. However, I liked using my AB's so much for this, I'm thinking about getting a power pack myself. I have a few parks in my area I would love to be able to bring my AB's to, but there wouldn't be any AC outlets available.

Update: I added a couple more. Feel free to check them out. The jumping shot was a bit over-blown (should have thrown on the polarizer), but I like the capture. For the second one, I told her to pretend she was Vanna White. :o)
