I'm curious if anyone out there has used Gallery (v1.5-RC2). It's a seemingly open source web gallery software. If you've used it, chime in, and let me know what you like about it, and what you hate about it. My current solution is iffy at best, and since I'm switching web hosts, I can start fresh. Thanks in Advance!

Gallery is a good program but if your hosting service has MySQL I would look at Gallery 2.X

Check HERE for a comparison

I've been using Gallery since before it had a 1 in front of it and was a beta product.

I've always really liked it. It was a good way to post galleries and allow comments and to keep things organized. More than just my everyday snapshots (that's what Flickr is for).

So I give it 2 thumbs up all the way! :-D

Gallery 2 is a prettier version of 1.5 if you'd like to install that as well. It has a prettier and more intuitive interface.

Have used gallery since the early days as well. Every release is an improvement on an always fine product. Go to version 2, it's really worth the jump.

Excellent reading Jrtodd, I'll finish it up when my boss isn't yelling at me to get some stuff done. It's good to hear that other people use and like it. I'd lean more towards gallery 2, but my host has the installer for 1.5 already to go, with very little to do as far as server config, including DB Creation, since I'm not well skilled in the arts of PHP, I'm wondering if the installation of 2 might be over my head.

works good ... no major complaints

by itself:

//www.shutupmilo.com/gallery/main.php

integrated into wordpress (random image widget) or click on "photo gallery" to see gallery with wordpress wrapped around it:

The instructions they have are pretty helpful in walking you through. Took me a couple of times but I got it and this was one of the first DB I had set up. My next recommendation is to set gallery up in a sub directory, mine is setup as photos.johnandsherry.net. This keeps me out of that directory when updating my site with GoLive.

Is the text supposed to overlap the image and is the second row of images on a page supposed to overlap the first?

no ... and no

is that what you're seeing?

what's your screen resolution?

specifically what text is overlapping, the album titles?

Yes and yes. No, it's not screen resolution dependent. All the information along side the images overlaps the images (Title, # items, # views, etc). Actually, to be specific it overlaps the frames of the images. When you finally get to the actual gallery the image to the right overlaps the image to the left and the image below overlaps the image above.

One problem is in the width and height assigned to the .gallery-thumb class in //www.shutupmilo.com/gallery/themes/CollageEffect/theme.css.

You also have some mozilla specific tags in there. Best to get rid of those and just use standard CSS. Writing browser specific style sheets tends to fuggle things.

I'm probably biased, but I happen to love it.

...but, I've been one of the developers on it for around three years, now. Several other DPC members are, as well.

I'd definitely recommend G2 over G1. I use it both standalone for our personal site , and wrapped with Drupal for my photo blog. My wife has it in Drupal for her business.

this is interesting. I've viewed my own website from SEVERAL other computers and I've never seen an issue, nor has anyone ever told me about one.

I know very little about code. The CSS wasn't written by me. I'll look into it, though.

Thank You :)

Did you have a look in any other browsers besides IE?

"bookmarking chimericvisions" profile for help later. J/K.

I'll talk to my host about 2. Maybe they're already working on an installer for that, if not, maybe I can be a guinea pig or something like that. I can handle the DB stuff, it's the PHP, and making it all talk together that I have issues, which is why I'm seriously considering dropping my current flash gallery.

Your host probably has a forum and more likely than not if someone has had issues with installation they will have posted it there. Worth a looking into.

Hi-ho,

I'll second version 2...

I don't have mine on the public 'net, but I've been using Gallery for about 5 years or so, from one of the Beta's of 1.

I had to upgrade as my 1.4 gallery started to grind to a halt when I went past 6000 images stored in it.. (I put _everything_ I shoot for the paper in the gallery on a server at home, along with all my personal stuff).

It's a robust, and very feature-rich gallery package.

Cheers, Me.

It'll be a long time before I want to have 1000 displayable images, much less 6k, so not really worried about file size limitation, though, I have an old box that I've been thinking about turning into a linux box, that would make a good way of accessing those files from the rest of the network for long term storage, especially with RAW support possible.

I'ts good to hear this kind of feedback about it though. Thanks again to all of you.
