where are you going to be? if you're up front, i like an 85mm and a 15mm fisheye, but that's in small venues.

give us some more details about the venue(s) and setup.

Yes it is. It's a great value. It isn't that much longer than the 50/1.4 though, so if you're really feeling the 50 is too short, the 85 might not be as long as you'd like.

i've rented the Nikon AF Nikkor 85mm f/1.8D a few times and really enjoyed the results. it made it easier to get right in on the faces and produced some great shots. the 50 just wasn't enough. 105 was too much (i had to stand back too far and kept getting people in the shot).

as for outdoors, i'm not sure what would be best.

if you have a camera shop where you can rent lenses, i'd do that and get a couple to try out.

i heard the 135 is better than the 85 but is it that much better?

That is a good suggestion. Estimate where you will be shooting from and then try different lenses trying to duplicate the types of shooting positions and distance you will be at.

Everyone has different approaches to shooting concerts. When I shoot I like zooms, my 17-55mm 2.8 and my 70-200mm 2.8, to give me flexibility of positioning. I really like tight closeups of the performers faces so the 70-200mm is a must regardless of what else I would carry and 2.8 has usually been fast enough in 90% of what I shoot.

I have been thinking of getting a 10.5mm for the really cool wide angle stuff and an 85mm 1.4 for real low light but..honestly...I probably wouldnt use them too much so the expense isn't worth it.

Does Canon have an L 28-70mm? That would be an awesome concert zoom lens.

Kind of on subject. Do you ever get any hassle bringing a camera and lens into a venue? I've seen posts where people brought a 70-200 with them. No problems or does it depend on the venue?

Depends on a lot of things. I assumed the origninal poster was going to be photographing as a freelancer or for hire but as a pro.

If you are just going as an audience member then it really depends..there are no real guidelines other than check with the venue you will be going to about the rules for that event.

I rarely shoot a concert/music event unless I am part of the press or the venue staff where I can get almost unlimited access. Even then there are rules.

Canon's EF 28-70 f2.8 L USM has been discontinued. It's replacement is the EF 24-70 f2.8 L USM.

There is also a newer one, the EF-S 17-55 f2.8 IS USM. As an EF-S model it will only fit on the 20D, 30D & the Rebels. But it is supposed to be very sharp, deserving of the L designation if it were in the EF series. It's combination of fast aperture and stabilization would seem well suited for concert shooting if you could get close enough.

The 135 is universally thought of as one of Canon's very best lenses. It is incredibly sharp, even wide open. It's one of only a very few lenses that, at f/2.8, will yield sharp, astigmatism-free star images at the very corners of a full 35mm frame. It's on my short list of wanted glass.
It's price is also incredibly reasonable, considering its speed, L build, and optical performance.

If you haven't already done so, check out the equipment and photography of BobsterLobster. Bob does AMAZING concert work and also has a fantastic blog with a lot of his work. He also has some GREAT tips on his blog for concert photography, from equipment, to getting gigs, to techniques. I know he has a link to his blog on his profile page.

Good luck!
