Thats fair enough and..IF the challenge had been stated in this manner then your proclivity would be justified.
However, that was not the challenge presented to us in the description.

Yes but why do you think this was put in the description Conversion/desaturation to black and white or shooting in black and white is NOT allowed.

I've obviously upset a few people with what I said...I appologise, but...
ANYONE can take a picture of a B&W object without worrying about colour in the background...
This would have been a really good challenge if the description had been more clear and had led everybody to produce a B&W only image using colour settings as per KarenNfld's original suggestion. I had my image all planned out, but did not have time to execute it. I think we would have seen many more creative entries... |

How many times have you seen a photo entered that had a specific part of it desaturated to add emphasis?
With the fact that this particular basic challenge was run with advanced editing that was the first example that popped into my mind.
My point, if Karen's description had been used specifically stating that the entire photo was to look as if were a black and white photo but shot in color with no desaturations or conversions..then..yes..that is what people would have done.
By stating specifically that the subjects/or subjects (ie..a part of ..no the entire photo) were to be in black and white then that left a much broader interpretation.
Punishing the photographers because Drew and Langdon did not use the words of Karen I think would be unfair.
I don't think it will be that much harder to spot the good attempts at a quality photo from the misses in this challenge any more than any other challenge..even with the variance in interpretations. |

You know, there should be a new rule. If you think someones photo is so bad that it is voted a 1, then a comment as to why should be mandatory. I've been running 5s and 6s all morning and then some one comes along with a 1, and no reason why!!

I realize that with the advance editing rules, it appears that the subject needed to be in black and white, (such as my dutch belt cows idea) but I may have been able to desat the backgroud. I would not have been using black and white settings, or converting to black and white in that way. Thanks for the clarification. I agree, many black and white photos are taken with some area in color for emphasis. Likewise, you can do the same with color by emphasizing with black and white. It now gives me a different perspective for this challenge. As long as the subject is black and white, then I guess that manuever would be okay. |

There's the spirit!
I don't disagree that a challenge where a black and white photo (meaning no part to be in anything but shades of gray) taken in color would be a good challenge. Just one look at my profile and you can see I love black and white. And that may well have been the thinking behind this challenge.
However, with hundreds and hundreds of photographers entered in these challenges I think we can see how important the challenge description wording can be. :-) |

Well my interpretation of the challenge is that the photograph should have predominantly Grayscale colours with an acceptable hint of other colors.......
But still a photograph like an Zebra in a field can be considered fair if the focus is on zebra than on surroundings..... |

I am discouraged on my image. My subject is black and white while the background is in color. One comment I have received likes the shot, however my score is below 5. Not sure if I am receiving low scores because the image is not all black and white? The challenge calls for the main subject to be in B/W not the entire image yet as I look at all the entries the majority are all b/w. This is going to be a long week! |

Tell me about a long week...I don't have any color in my photo. The lil color I do have is masked under something white. And I'm sub 4 right now. I really can't wait for the comments to explain to me why my photo sucks. |

It will be a long week, and I will be reviewing and rereviewing my scores a lot. I know where you are coming from. I feel that way a lot. Anyway, I will keep your name and when the challenge is done, if I haven't made a comment on your pic, I will make it a point to make a comment. Any other takers? The first 20 folks who send me pm's who want comments after the challenge if I don't make one will get a comment.Originally posted by albc28: Tell me about a long week...I don't have any color in my photo. Okay now I get it. Are people interpeting that photos are supposed to have black and white? What if a photo has all black or all white? Is that DNMC? |

Well the challenge did say take a photo of a "black & white" subject or subjects. It did not say black or white.

my score is a 4.2, i dont know if its because it sucks or because it has color in the photo. probably both, considering everyone thinks the challenge has to be a certain way even though the description says otherwise. For all of us that put color in the background, we can just consider ourselves unique!

I don't remember reading Karen's post in the suggestions forum, but that's how interpreted the topic. Shoot a photo in color but it actually looks like a b/w one. So if color stands out in the photo how does that fit in? description says no desat in camera or during PP, so I reckon that puts more emphasis on the b/w look.

See I took the whole part of black & white (OR GRAYSCALE) to mean your subject shouldn't have any color in it. Meaning that anything black, white, gray or a combination of the three fits. |

So far... hmmm... interesting... This is my frist entry to a challenge, will be fun to see how it pans out:)
It was also very interesting to look at the different interpretations.... I like to look at all of the pictures before I vote.
