The photo I am reffering to is actually a very good photo and I have scored it an 8! though my score will not count at the end as I am now not going to vote the challenge as I feel there are just too many that IMO, do not meet the challenge, which has kind of spoiled it a little for me... |

Went to bed (actually woke up at 1pm to look at my score and then went back to bed) with a whopping 5.3. Pretty pleased to wake up to this. I wont be looking real close at the challenge pics til Friday as I am out of town and the monitor I am looking at makes everything really REALLY dark and it just wouldnt be fair to vote right now. But a quick lookover and I see some really cool shots of black and white subjects - and oh no - they have color in the picture. Oh wait a minute - that fit the challenge description. Nevermind. |

Forgot to add - no hotpasta comment. I am bummed about that one. Didnt get one on gold but that shot sucks. Was hoping for one from him on this one. When I get a comment from hotpasta in challenge I feel like I done good. But I did get a bag head "Great job!!!". Not quite the same effect though.

Forgot to add - no hotpasta comment. I am bummed about that one. Didnt get one on gold but that shot sucks. Was hoping for one from him on this one. When I get a comment from hotpasta in challenge I feel like I done good. But I did get a bag head "Great job!!!". Not quite the same effect though.

THere are certain people out there that when I recieve a comment from them sort of validates my attempt at the challenge. Yours happens to be one of them that tends to come in early. Bag head "Great job" also seems to come in early but its not quite the same. Love your comments my man. |

No - I found One (during my brief look through) that blatently broke the rules. There dozens of images which, IMO, have completely misunderstood the (very simple) challenge description and have shot something B&W, surrounded by color!?!?! |
Many of us are newbies to DPC and new to photography. So we may be mis-interpreting the rules of the challenge. I assumed this was to be a B&W object against a color background.
If the contest is to be B&W with shades of gray only, then perhaps the contest could be more specific. I can certainly see that now, but I completely missed it.

The challenge says: Take a COLOR photo of a black & white (or grayscale) subject or subjects. Conversion/desaturation to black and white or shooting in black and white is NOT allowed.
Where does it say NO other colours. If your subject or subjects are black and white, the backgroung, the foreground interst, the stand it's on or whatever can be ANY colour.

I did not enter this challenge at all because I took the rules literally. I assumed that the image had to be done entirely in tones of gray. If I had moved out of the box and realized some color could be used, I would have entered. I was considering taking a shot of some dutch black and white cows, but the background was a beautiful green undulating landscape, so I decided it did not meet the challenge. I am sorry, but I am voting these images with my original interpretation, of creating a monochrome image without any other colors in it. Sorry to all of you that get low scores from me due to the fact you put some other color into it.
As to desaturation, or conversion to black and white, I believe there are a number of images that might have done this. Hopefully my votes will reflect those that appear to have done this maneuver which dp said would be grounds for dq.

People should not assume, however, something was desaturated. If you suspect a rules violation, request a validation rather than voting low.
Probably everyone knows that by now, but it's worth repeating in a challenge like this where people might "assume".

That's good for you and that is the way it should be just vote on how you feel the description was written.
I can't see why they would have added the extra rule of no B/W conversion or shooting in B/W if they wanted any color in the image but that is just my view, to me the idea was to try to create a B/W image without photoshop or camera settings.

Purplefire has this right. If the challenge would have been about making a black and white photo but shoot in color..that is what the challenge would have said.
The specific mention of "Subject or Subjects" means that Black and White WITHIN the photo. Now if your subject were the entire photo...say ...the side of a Zebra..then yes..your whole photo would probably be black and white.
Also, you could light a black and white subject with colored light to get a cool effect and that would also be on-topic IMO, based on the challenge description.
You know, these challenge descriptions are not meant to be shackles..they are meant to challenge the creativity of people. In the many years I have hung out here...I can't remember Drew or Langdon coming on here and clarifying challenges in a restrictive tone. I always get the sense they like people pushing boundaries and looking for stuff outside the lines but within the spirit and intent of the challenge. |

When I originally suggested this challenge idea that was my thinking....a photo taken in colour but looks like a B&W photo. Perhaps I wasn't clear enough in my explanation, in any case the challenge description by the admins didn't state that. I do think I will have a bias towards photos that look like B&W photos when I vote on this challenge though (I did not enter).
