Recent models of Canon DSLRs have replaced the Parameters settings with Picture Styles. I'd like to hear how you feel about this change, especially if you have used both types.

There are ways to get parameters to simulate picture styles. Honestly, because of the work I do, I stick with 0 across the board for most all my settings (sharpness, contrast, etc etc). And when I do convert a RAW file, I use DPP with the "Neutral" picture style. I find that if you properly expose and white balance, the colors that come out of those files are often very well saturated.

If you shoot RAW, then you can use DPP to try out Picture Styles on older caemras, I do this all the time with my 1D and 1D mk2. Certainly, if you shoot raw, then Picture Styles are NOT a reason to ugprade to a 30D/Mk2N/5D.

Now, if you have a need to output jpegs on the spot with a certain style attached, then you DO have a reason to possibly upgrade to a Picture Style enabled camera, or you can just find the Parameter settings that simulate them well enough.

I never use them. I've been using standard the whole time, but I will probably go to neutral or faithful... I edit almost all of my pics.

Even shooting large numbers for a job, I still shot RAW and used DPP. Most of my editing remained in PS.

So picture styles for me are met with general indifference.

If you are wondering, page 56-62 of the 30D manual has information on the settings.

I think you can view it at the Canon site in PDF.

Bump, still hoping for some more comparisons from people who have used both.

i hate the new pictures styles. i like the look of my old rebel xt pictures more than my 30D. the pictures of the 30d just looks not as sharp and dirtier than the rebel. i'm thinking of going back to a rebel xt.

Picture Styles are potentially pretty useful, and woud be more so if it were possible to store more of them in-camera and switch between them. The default styles stored in the camera are also not that great, IMO, with exception of Neutral and Faithful.
Overall, I'm not that enthused with them at the moment, but it is a complete non-issue for me since I shoot 100% RAW.
I leave the camera set to "Neutral" so that the historgram is based on a lower-contrast image.

Edit for typos

It's not the camera...You just have to learn the new controls and settings...the 30D is more customizable than the XT, the downside of this is you HAVE to learn to take control of your camera.
