You mean instead of one at 40 and the other at 55? |

Good thought! But I am auto-focusing it (though manual focus has the same result) |

Ok, well the 17-40 is for film (full sensor) and the kit lens is for the smaller sensor of the 20d. What should the kit 18-55 lens be taken at to be the same as 40mm full sensor lens? |

?? I'll just eyeball it in the camera to get the same zoom size with the 18-55 lens as the 40mm.
Good idea with the tripod.
Thanks for spending some time to help me out! |

use a tripod, test another kit lens to see if it gives the same results with same settings...if it does, camera is problem...if it is sharp, then lens is problem...I have same lens, it is excellent, even if it is lightweight and cheap. |

Ok... new test results. The first is a $600 L series EF 17-40 f/4. The second is the kit lens EFS 18-55 f/3.5-5.6 (retail... $5?). Both cropped at 100%, with flash @ 40mm, 100 ISO, 1/60, f/4 (on the L lens) and f/4.5 (on the kit lens), sharpness all the way up in camera, RAW - on a tripod.
<- L lens
<- Kit lens

well hard to say, personally i dont think your 20 d havea problem, the 17 40 is not the best in sharpnest (especially for close object, it work better on landscapes) then you should use the sharp tool on the raw panel, and make good contrast, on both pics to see something
dont worry about your cam, i had the same doubs the fist time, |

The sharp tool in Raw panel? I thought that only applied on the preview in Raw viewer and didn't do anything to the image once opened in PS (tried it and the image didn't change).
*Sigh*... bummer - so what's the max recommended enlargment size for the camera? I shoot landscapes (which is why I got the 17-40) and want to blow them up to sell, but at 12x18 and even 8x10 the photos are not sharp. I'm almost tempted to go back to film at this rate. |

Below were taken using canon 350d with 17-40L @40mm
This was taken with av=4.0, iso=100, tv=1/60
This was taken with av=8.0, iso=100, tv=1/200
Anyway, I think the problem is camera shake. At 40mm, 1/60 is slow for a sencor with 1.6x crop I think.
As you can see if I take it with 1/200, picture come out sharp.

Also, being that you are using the lenses for landscape, you will probably be using the lenses a bit closer to f/8. Do the tests like that.
Use Mirror lockup (custom function 12? I forget).
DEFINITELY tripod mount and use the self-timer.
That should get you figured out pretty quick.
If using the flash, 1/60 should be fast enough, but I would personally push the exposure up to 1/160 or more to get better results. |

Well, yes it is only 8MP but I've blown up some to 8x10 and they were not sharp. I wouldn't have gotten the camera if I knew it couldn't do 8x10's. I thought they were well within it's range. |
8x10's should be easy for the camera. I've printed 8x12's with my 5MP P&S that came out rather well.
Spelling...

The quoted focal lengths are the actual focal lengths of the lens, regardless on which camera it is. So 30mm on the 18-55 is the same as 30mm on the 17-40. |
