I have taken some photos recently at a wedding with my Canon 5D, and I would like to put into an Album.
The processing company said my files were huge and I would need to make the size of my photos to 10 x 8 in order for them to complete my order.
They said they could do this for me, but it would cost about £2.20 for each print and there are about 60 prints.
They said it would be cheaper if I changed them myself.

I thought I would only have to go to image size, and Hey Presto type in 10 inches by 8 inches ?

I think I am missing something, I am using Photoshop CS2

Can you help me please.

Cheers.

Joe

This tutorial is a good place to start.

Not sure with the 5D but with the 20D the default size is equivalent to 8x12 or 4x6 inches.. So in order to crop to 10x8 you will need to effectively remove or crop off 2 inches. The easiest way in PS and there are a few ways of doing it, is set the crop tool to the 8x10 size and you can then drag the crop to select the part of the photo you want printed. If you just change the size to 8x10 you will distort the photo. If you let the lab do it they will select the part to print and it may not be what you want.

Here's an example I drew for another thread which illustrates what Phantom is talking about.

They are prolly refering to the actual MP of the file. Some computer systems out there can't deal with 10+ MP files on their older computers.

Within reason, any company with 1 hour photo service can crop the photos. The software actually does it automatically in many cases. So what they are telling you sounds more than a smidge odd. You need to check with the specific problem. It's sounding like a resolution issue. If that's the case, cropping the dimensions is only part of the issue.

Find out specifically what they need in order to print.

I had this problem too the first time I tried to get some prints done from a good place online (instead of going to a drugs store or the like). As one person here said, when you open your crop tool, you can set the paramaters of the tool at the top to 8x 10 inches and this will get your proportions. You may still need to go into "Resisize Image" and set the pixels per inch to 300. This will give then the 300 dots per inch they usually want. Be careful about trying to get something too close to the edge- they may still trim a little bit from the print and if it is matted that will also cover up some of the outside edge of your image so do not crop too closely. A quarter inch should be plenty. (Still make the image 8x 10 but leave anything you still want to be able to see at least 1/4 inch from the edge just to be safe). I was used to resizing by pixels for the web and had not dealt with resizing to inches. They said some of my prints were like 24 inches on a side!
