Firstâ€Â¦I screwed up when I sized this photo for submission. I can live with that and realize what I did.
Secondâ€Â¦ I don’t understand is why I received “21” 1 votes for a photo that clearly meets the minimum requirements of the challenge.
Thirdâ€Â¦just so you understandâ€Â¦I appreciate the comments given to my photo, especially the ones about the size. I am always looking to improve and constructive comments, positive or negative, are always helpful!
My suggestion:
If one of the goals of DPC is to help us improve our photography, then maybe there should be a mandatory “comment” for scores of “1” and “10”. This way we can receive input from both ends of the spectrum and get a sense of why someone felt the need to vote on either end of the scale!
I look forward to hearing the comments about this suggestion.
Thanks and happy hunting!

As you said yourself, probably the largest factor in your score was the size of the image.
The technicals of your shot seemed fine to me - it's well enough lit and focus is OK. I also like the close crop that fills the frame.
Probably the one thing that I would most like the change would be the subject matter. We see a lot of stars and stripes flag shots so unless you can find something new to do with the concept you're automatically up against some *very* stiff competition.

I certainly don't see how anyone could have given you a one or a two for this shot. On the other hand, I am VERY surprised at the number of tens you recieved as well. It seems a bit washed out and grainy to me. The key is that it is too small for me to really tell too much about it. I think the biggest problem with a smaller size entry is not so much just the size but a fear that it is trying to hide something. When you have strict limitations as to how big it can be, it behooves you to try and get everything you can out of your shot. I'm not positive but I don't remember a small entry ever doing well. Just my humble opinion. BTW, I scored it a neutral "5". |

I don't think that would change much. I think most people who give out scores of 1 and 10, do so without much thought. If you were forced to comment when giving a one or a ten, I believe we will see a dramatic increase in 2's and 9's.
I'm probably going to get slaughtered for saying this, and I know some have hinted at it in the past, but I firmly believe there are a few individuals who try and improve their standings in the challenges by voting very low on good photographs. I believe these votes are not sieved out by the ´´voting checker`` because they do not vote only ones, but vote low on photos which are obviously superior to their own. |

But then, it's always good photos that win the competitions. Not that always agree with the winners - and I think some really quite ordinary 'good' photos have done very well here, but there's no denying the impact and quality of almost all ribbon photos.

I too was surprised by the # of "10's". I also learned another lesson doing that photo...play with it in the digital darkroom. That is pretty much a "raw" photo. I guess personal opinion is also a large part of the judging. Subject matter that is liked or disliked by someone will receive ratings not related to the quality of the photo!

I think that the the reason you got those 1's and those 10's are the same. That it is a picture of an American Flag. Some peoples opinion on America right now is as polar as the makes they gave.
Me, I gave it a 7. I found it a little clie, especially with what is going on around the world now. Looking at the comments, though, I am surprised at how many people complained about the size. I thought the size was great. It matched the cropping of the flag nicely. The rest of my comments made during voting still stand.
Bigger isn't necessarily better. ;o)
