Ok, I am going to go nuts! I knew I was not going to finish well, but 11 1's. and 23 2's for a perfectly exposed and focused shot with an apple in it?

If some thinks a photo is that far off the mark, recommend it for disqualification please.

Just a technical note: I desaturated the image most of the way, and then increased the yellow and red saturation. I had some great comments, and I wish I could have planned this shot better, but the shot I had planned fell apart. The light was really great coming through the yellow curtians, with the sun breaking out after a rain storm, my wife and I liked this affect.

Thanks to everyone that left comments, and good job to all, this was a great field.

Hey Zeissman -- I feel your pain. I thought your photo was wonderful and scored it a 7. I agree that it makes no sense to see so many 1's and 2's here....

Please don't. Disqualification requests are only to be used for rules violations. Not meeting the challengs or submitting a poor image are not reasons for disqualification. NOTE: I am not saying this was a poor image.

Zeiss, unfortunately I think there are some people that have a knee-jerk negative reaction to kid shots. It's unfortunate but it may explain some of the scores.

Zeiss, I gave you 6. I didn't have time to comment on a lot of photos this week, so I didn't post this, but I thought the colour of the child's skin was a bit odd. She has a kind of unhealthy pallour. Maybe it's a female thing (I read that women pick up small changes in people's appearance or behaviour more than men in scientific tests) but I get a weird feeling from that. All other aspects of the photo are fine, and normally it probably would have gotten an 8 or a 9 from me, but funny skin tones can really turn me off a photo.

Hey Zeissman,

I liked it too. I gave it a 7. It was in my top 10.

I loved your shot and scored it high. For some reason this week lots of my higher end picks are mid way and some I personally thought were awful are high scorers. Just typical DPChallenge results.. DOnt worry about it. If I ever get over a 5 on anything here I will be thrilled.

Thanks all, I am really not worried about what scores so and so gave me, but I appreciate the comments. I was rated higher by photogs than non-photogs. I just had to vent.

I believe that not meeting the rules is grounds for disqualification. Drew said so to me in a post a few months ago.

1's and 2's seem to be handed out a bit too liberally, I agree.

If I ever did say this, it was when 'not meeting the challenge' was in the rules as an acceptable reason for disqualification. We stopped using that as means for DQ several months ago (4? 5?), and I'm not sure you've been around that long. Either way, it's no longer an acceptable grounds for DQ.

That sounds pretty official, thanks Drew. And I have been around since May.

I think that number of 1s and 2s is simply grotesque. I apoloigize for not leaving a comment, but I scoredyou an 8 and you were in my top 5.

Maybe there should be prerequisite reading on what the scores mean, and more indepth discussion about how the scoring works. It just seems to be getting crazier!

I agree with those low votes that leave you guessing. Why do so many people score 1, 2 and 3? I've put these kinds of scores before to pictures that don't meet the challenge outright, or when they are very badly executed.

For my F&V picture I put a lot of effort, a whole day on it, and I surely have fruits and vegetables, so I did meet the challenge. But I still got a lot of 2's and 3's. What do people think when they score like that?

I read this before in these forums, but I like the idea of forcing comments if you rate a picture between 1 and 4. This way those lower votes will not be anonymous anymore.

Zeissman,

After looking at it again I see I actually gave it an 8. Go figure... I guess some people don't like people in photos?

perhaps it's time to renew the thread of rehashing the scoring system - i don't recall this particular suggestion in those threads: how about something along the lines of the (now infamous) Olympic judging? throw out the top 5% and bottom 5% of each entry's votes, eliminating some of the wild votes ...
09/16/2002 01:30:46 AM · #16
I agree with spiderman the voting needs to be looked at. I know my entry wasn't that good the lighting was bad but 14 1's and 32 2's!
I might as well sell my camera!
My negative space photo has currently had 3 votes for an average of three!

Right now, it says I have 4 comments, and 3 votes. I vote says 10, but my score is 5.6.

On the bright side, I am getting very good comments with good ideas, and this is my best starting score. I am very happy, but I wonder if others are having a similar expirience?

No wait, I am now up to 6.6! Woo hoo! Good luck to all, and thanks for being kind to my rant, I know it is one we have all been through.

Voting is purely a subjective thing and I feel that it should stay that way. There shouldn't be any rules for "how to vote". I think that's part of the whole dpchallenge experiment. It's about seeing what the community as a whole feels.

If I get a 1, it's because someone thought my photo should get a 1. I'm not disgusted by it. I just understand that not everyone is the same.

I do think that if you get a low score, it's good to ask "why". That way you can learn. But by all means try not to get upset. People vote the way they do for their own reasons. We all have our own points of view.

For example I gave "A is for Apple!" a rather low score. That was because I thought it was a snapshot where the muted colors made the subject look almost unhealthy. Technically I didn't find any problems, but aesthetically I did.

Some of you will agree with me, and some of you won't. But at least we can learn from each other's comments.

I gave you a 6. Now when I look back on it I think I was being pretty generous.

Zeissman,

I gave you a seven. I don't care much about exact or "off" colors, because I don't see colors as others do anyway. I often evaluate the tonal values (as if a grayscale image) more than the color itself.
I just went back and looked it again. The tone range looks great to me. You can still see the subtle print pattern in her blouse. You've maintained good sharpness (e.g. hair) and avoided a potential moiré/artifact problem with the cross-hatched pattern on the chair.

Thanks also for explaining your procedure -- I often try and experiment with techniques suggested here...

I find the problem with photographing loved ones is that they mean so much to you that the picture can look great but because they mean nothing to other people they shot becomes and bit less appealing, slightly boring infact!
09/16/2002 04:08:46 AM · #22
Why do I post on DP Challenge? To experiment, learn and have fun.

Do I care about comments? Yes, I do.

What do I pay attention to in comments? Constructive criticism and praise.

Do I care about scores? Not enough, to be honest.
09/16/2002 04:52:56 AM · #23
Zeiss , I gave that one a 5. I did not leave any comments last week and I voted very quickly which was not very for this kind of shot. I did not like it specifically but it was well done technically. I had some problems like Lisa said with the colors for some reason I do not know.

This week I started high as well .. I usually start at 4.8 (last week) and 5.4 (hte week before) ... I started at 6.4 so even if it goes down .. I am really happy with it.

Zeissman, I scored it a 6 and I too feel your pain. I continually get the same types of scores and I know that my photos fit the challenge. I think many of us are not getting the credit we deserve.

I looked quickly at the submissions for this week and was astounded at the number that I don't feel fit the challenge. I took what I thought was a lovely photo with definate negative space. The first 25 votes and I'm at 4.95. I don't expect to win ya'll but come on! I feel just like Tom n Texas did when he said he would never submit again. If you want to give me ones and twos, just start commenting that I should sell my camera too. That's the message you are sending with those scores.

Brian.....I agree...all those ones are uncalled for. I will continue to think that if we had an open vote (meaning the individual scoring was made public just like comments at the end of a challenge) we could avoid a lot of these misgivings.

People DO CARE what other here think..why else enter? And the vote of individuals here means something. If we could see where people stand on photos it could help us understand who we are appealing to etc..etc..

I gave this photo a 7. I think some more drama in the photo could have helped me like it even more but I saw the technical skill in the photo and rewarded it.

And based on the way people are telling you their score here I tend to think you will feel better about your score now as well :-)

At leat give us the option of letting our scores be automatically shown maybe?
