I tried shooging in raw this morning, but Photoshop doesn't recognize the files. Is there some sort of conversion process I need to go through? MS Digital Image recognizes them, but each file takes about 10 minutes to load. So why do people shoot in raw anyway? Does it really make that big a difference in quality?

What version of Photoshop are your running? If it's CS or CS2, you probably need to go to Adobe's site and download the latest version of Adobe Camera RAW (ACR). If it's 7 or earlier you'll need to go get something like Rawshooter Essentials to do your conversions or use DPP that came with your camera.

you've opened a bottomless can of worms with your question about whether RAW is worth it...

you'll need a decent conversion app to view and adjust the files. i find it worth the extra effort.

Try this thread. The OP uses a Canon 20D and you will find some very useful information throughout that thread for you.

RAW is like cheating ... white balance is no longer an issue because you can change it. Even many images that looked over-exposed can be saved afgter the fact due to RAW allowing for the adjustment as if in the camera. Confession: I am a RAW addict.
