I was taking pictures at the beach yesterday.
Everything was fine.
Then for no apparent reason, this happens to every picture I take

I've changed lenses and the same thing happens.
I even took a picture with no lens and the same result.
I've "rebooted"; but again to no avail.

Any ideas?

I'm pretty certain that it's still under warranty.
But I'd rather not be without my camera for a couple of weeks whilst it's getting repaired.

busted shutter or something by the looks of it.

Looks like the mirror isn't getting out of the way. Make sure there isn't any sand in the body first.

move your finger from in front of the lens?

Seriously though - does it look the same at all the shutter speeds?

It's got to be either the shutter or the sensor. With the lens off take a slow speed pic - can you see the cutain move when the mirror goes up? Does the mirror even go up?

It's either a shutter problem or mirror.

You can tell by putting your camera in timer mode, so the mirror will lockup before the shot is taken.

With the lens off, shoot in timer mode. The mirror should lock up before the shutter open and closes. If it's not moving all the way out of the way, it's the mirror, if it does move out of the way, it is likely the shutter.

goodman had this problem a while back on her 300D and it was the shutter.

well, after performing some of the recommended diagnostic exercises, it looks as though the mirror does go all of the way up, but when it does, I can see a small black flap* behind it that also has a mirror on it, but that doesn't seem to do much.
In fact, there looks to be a small space under the black flap where I can see the sensor.
But then again, I could just be imagining up as it would seem to fit the problem I have.

*Sorry for not knowing the technical details of what the black flap is called :-)

That is the little mirror that makes the autofocus work. My camera is broke the same way. Flip it up and you can take pictures with manual focus just fine... I can't afford to get mine fixed till fall and the pizza biz pics up again...

That would be your shutter. Try to put your camera in sensor clean mode and see if the shutter moves completely out of the way, allowing you to see the full sensor.

No, it's a little mirror behind the big mirror. Some of the light actually makes it through the big mirror in the center, hit's the little mirror and goes into the autofocus thingy...

Ooops, yeah, I just thought of that.

But, still I would think if the camera was in sensor cleaning mode, it would be simple to see what isn't moving out of the way.

That's how I figured it out with mine. I'm hoping it's a simple spring but still don't have the cash now to get it fixed. If he goes into sensor cleaning mode, he can push the little mirror up into the big mirror. Camera will work fine but it will be manual focus...

The mirror on my Rebel has been retracting into the ceiling of the camera lately (three times so far), and I don't know why, I've pulled it back down into place each time and it works fine. Thinking about buying a 30D and sending the 300D in for repair, and then using it as a backup.

Actually, I don't think it really matters what the problem is.
I can't fix it.
But luckily I bought an extended warranty when I bought the camera.
And I've just checked and I have 1 year and 7 days left on it!
Hooray for extended warranties.
I never normally bother with those things.
I always think they are a rip off and a waste of money.
But as I was paying $1,000 for the camera, I thought it may be worth the extra $125.
And I was right.
This is going to be the second time I've returned the camera to Canon.
The first time it wouldn't read any of my memory cards and gave me an "ERR 02" message.
They repaired the camera and returned it promptly.
I'm hoping that this time they will replace it.

Thanks for all the help everyone.
I knew I could count on you lot.
:-)

It's the shutter and you need to send it in for repairs. It's a pretty common problem with the 300D and you don't need to panick.

It's not the shutter... I have the exact same problem with mine now. And like I said above, you can still use it till you actually send it off. Mine has been this way several months now.

LOL, unless you are like me and can't manual focus to save your arse... :-)

I'm gettin' pretty good at it... Got two 6+ challenge entries and a whole bunch of wrestlin' pics with it this way!
