Heads up for anyone interested: Dell has another deal. This time a Canon 30D body for $1170 shipped. Coupon expires after 60 uses.
For those with deeper pockets, there's also a Canon EOS-1Ds Mark II body for $6399 shipped. This one expires after 10 uses. |

I have no connection whatsoever to Dell (note that the Rebel is from NewEgg), but I DO like to save money. Just trying to help others who might be looking for this stuff. |

I apologize to you Shannon, for the rude tone of my previous post.
Your posts presenting "good deals" for the rest of us are mostly for deals from Dell, with some exceptions. I have heard of many users complaing about problems in attempting to buy from Dell. The one time I attempted to buy from them was a fiasco ending with me buying elsewhere, and phone calls from Dell threatening to charge my credit card even though I had already received an e-mail from them acknowledging the cancellation of my order. Dell is notorious for very slow delivery of sale pricd items, and for trying to switch customers to other items when they can't deliver on time. You have a position of authority in this community, and for that you get a lot of respect from the members here. If you want to tell us about good deals, finding a more reputable vendor would be a more responsible way of doing that.
As always, just my two cents.

No offense taken Harvey (I actually thought you were poking me in jest). I check "deal" sites several times a day, so when I see something photographic that looks particularly interesting, I post it for the benefit of others. I, too, have heard of people having problems with Dell, but I bought my last three cameras from them. I had to wait over a month before they shipped my Rebel XT, BUT it was such a great deal that I was able to sell it used on eBay 9 months later for $100 more than I originally paid! I'd say that was worth the trouble. ;-)

Indeed, 'tis the kind of deal I myself would love to grab, but I have not secured spousal permission yet. That's a delicate instrument to play, the time has to be just right.... |

ask my husband how to do it. he gets stuff/permission for stuff from me ALL the time. there must be some sort of subliminal messaging at work.
forgot to add the "repeatedly ask/talk about it(like 50 times a day) and then pout for a week)" method works well. but for this deal youd already have had to invested some time in this method.

Congrats! You bought two of them, right? Finder's fee, you know...
BTW, since you'll likely be shooting with a 30D after next week, We're booting you off Team 20D! :-P

Everyone likes to save money. But no one likes to see vendors take advantage of consumers. It pains me to see a person of influence in this community support a merchant that has a such a poor track record. There really is more to buying a camera than just finding the lowest price, and then passively accepting whatever delays, and other forms of abuse, the seller sends your way. I think that for digital cameras moreso than other items, like refrigerators or bedspreads, a long delay is very frustrating, especially for first time DSLR buyers.
Or, to revert to my previous tone without directing it at a member of SC, Dell sucks. I mean Dell really sucks bad.
j/k j/k :) ;)
As always, just my two cents.

No argument there, but Apple doesn't have good deals on cameras. ;-P
I think Dell has learned from past mistakes to an extent, and limited their deals to a small number of coupon redemptions to avoid long backorders. You can still have a bad experience with even the best retailers (there was a recent complaint thread on B&H, and I've actually had more trouble with them!) |

Actually, I was checking the Apple online store a couple of weeks ago and they were doing the Nikon D50 for what seemed like a reasonable price.
edit: reasonable by Euro standards... the US$ prices don't look as impressive

Wow. I went to resellerratings, all set to stick it to Harvey with what a reputable company Dell is and dang...their six month rating is 3.8 and lifetime rating is 4.37. I had no idea. That's awful. Minus one tech support snafu, I've always been happing with my dealings with Dell (all of which have been computer equipment). Bummer. :( Not that I had any plans to change, but I guess this just reinforces my decision to stick pretty much solely with B&H. |

One thing I like about B&H is using it as a data base for specifications on products, such as Canon lenses. Does Dell offer that?

I did the same thing hours ago. ;-)
Nevertheless, I haven't had any problems ordering from Dell other than a long wait on one camera. Dell sells 13-15 BILLION dollars worth of products per quarter, so obviously not everyone has a bad experience. I'm sure most people aren't thrilled with Microsoft either, but they still buy MS products.

Yes, they do. If it makes you happy, you can still look up specs on the B&H (or Canon) web site anyway. The specs won't change just because you buy at Dell. |
