there's nothing wrong with a Rebel - besides it isnt a P&S so it doesnt fit here

If a photo was taken with a 3 megapixel camera, and then the same photo was taken with a 12 megapixel camera, and then the 12 megapixel image was scaled down to 3 mp, which do you think would look better?
Assume that both cameras have the same sensor and processing technology, etc. |

If both cameras have the same sensor size ... then the 3mp picture will better because the photosites on the 12mp camera will be smaller and noisier than on the 3mp camera.
If the 12mp camera is full frame, but the 3mp camera has an APS sized sensor, then the 12mp camera will produce the better picture (with less noise, and more dynamic range). |

... but only if the sensors in the above test were identical in size.
A 12 megapixel from a 5D scaled down to 3MP will look roughly the same in almost every case.
The difference is massive...
A curious example of this sensor size does exist though...
Check the DPReview for the Sigma D9 and D10 cameras... They are 3MP DSLRs that were able to hold their own against 6MP cameras (namely the Rebel and the D70) in almost every way.
It might sound surprising, but it's true.
I just want a 8MP sensor that has similar technology... That would be SWEEET. |

Yeah and the last time I thought to myself, "you know, I really wanna scale down this 8mp picture to 3mp" - never!
try blowing up a picture thats 3mp vs. 8mp and see where you get. Assuming they are both real sensors and not P&S toy versions. |

Can I get "Nikon P&S PoS" under my username? Just so y'all can retch violently when I start winning ribbons with it? :P
