Hey all,

While in college i remember learning about a photographer that used to shoot street portraits of blind, deaf, etc people. The people were always a little rough around the edges, and the photographs were taken in the early part of the 1900's (a guess), and the photographer would have the person holding a small sign with the word "Blind" or "Deaf" written on it. I'm trying to remmeber the name of the photographer, but am drawing a blank. Anyone know? The reason I ask is because I had an assignment back then in my class to try and replicate one of the photographers that we learned about, and he was my guy. Now that i'm getting more serious about photography I'd like to take another stab at my original attempt.

Thx

That's strange; I'm very familiar with the work of Paul Strand, one of the great early "modernist" photographers, and I can only recall offhand one photograph of his that fits this description, a shot of an older, blind woman wearing a placard lettered "BLIND" around her neck... I always understood this to be a sign she wore while begging on the streets in NYC...

Geez, why have I never thought about shooting candids of blind people? That makes it a LOT easier... hehe...

Robert,

You're probably correct...I'm trying to remember back about 5 years here, so chances are that I'm confusing him with some other person or information I was given. In any event, the picture you referenced is the one I was thinking about.

Was Stand the one who frequently used a 90 degree adapter on his lens to snap candids of people unknowingly, or am I thinking of someone else once again?
