My Mom and Brother have severe degeneration of the disks and are constantly battling pinched nerves. They Do have some great pain meds but also use alternating ice and heat. The ice reduces the inflamation and the heat relaxes the muscles. Definately see a doc for ANY pain meds other than OTC. You can cause some serious problems trying to medicate yourself using other peoples pills. *stepping down from my soapbox* |

I can comfirm this as I alternate between the two depending on price. Aleve is the non-generic brand of Sodium Naproxin.

Take a hot bath or shower to relax the area. Directly afterwards go and lie down in bed making sure you are lying in a neutral position - either on your back or side (with a pillow between your knees).
If you still can't walk or move much in the morning or you wake up with any "weird" (trust me, you'll know) sensations then get to the ER.
If your legs are numb, tingling or burning call an ambulance. I know it can be embarassing but you do not want to end up with nerve damage. Plus if you go in the flashing wagon you get seen faster - and I'm sure the last thing you want is a hospital waiting room.
Hope you feel better soon - take care buddy :) |

Because hot helps relax any muscle spasms and cold helps reduce any inflammation.
Anti-inflammatories such as ibuprofen need to be taken regularly for a few days to get the inflammation relief.
If you sleep on your back, use a pillow under your knees, if you sleep on your side, put it between your knees.
And SEE YOUR DOCTOR as soon as you can. Depending on the problem, he may also be able to give you some specific exercises that help strengthen the other supporting muscles, including those that run to the front, not just the back. |
All the above has worked for me, especially the ibuprofen, but indeed, it has to be in your system for a few days. Call your doctor and ask how much you can take. I'm large, I would take two every four hours after an initial dose of four. I know, I know, you'll be hurting for a few days, I feel (and have felt) your pain.
The pillows work, and stretching works, too. I now have a twice daily stretching routine, and I have not had my legs drop out in about three years, and it used to happen every three to four months.
See your doctor, for sure. Have them verify that it is the correct therapy.
Good luck to you. When the pain subsides, stretching & excersize. You'll be glad you did. |

Ok Ken, here goes...
First...did you ever get this checked out? It seems you have muscle spasms. These spasms probably came by making a wrong move with your spine.
With the old injuries, your spine probably developped a bit of osteoarthritis and then, certain movements tend to cause these spastic reactions to kind of protect the spine.
What I don't like is the pain going down to the legs. Do you mean the you have numbness or weakness with the pain or is it that you feel the pain makes you not want to move? Numbness, weakness with the pain could mean your sciatic nerve is pinched. One of the causes is a heniated disc.
One way or the other, you should have it checked out. X-rays can easily show osteoarthritic changes, and CT scanning and Magnetic resonnance scans can reveal any disc problems.
Now, for pain relief, you can use heat-cold. OTC drugs, like Tylenol, Aleve and even Ibuprofen(Motrin, Advil) can help a lot. Also, as mentionned, muscle relaxants will help, but they tend to make you drowsy. I'd stay away from narcotic pain relievers as much as possible...Don't want to make you a junkie!.
Most important...REST!
Get well soon!!!
Later,
John |

Hey thanks all for your tips & advice. I am doing better. No ambulance or trip to ER. I've been through this before and had it checked out awhile back and I don't remember what the doc said other than get rest and take meds. I think it's much stress and exhastion as well. So I spent some time away from the computer, did the heat/cold thing as recommended here, and took pretty much whatever I could get my hands on.
I did go outside and snap some pics around the yard today and I have to say, that seemed like the best treatment. My back felt a lot better! Seriously, it was weird.
Anywho - I appreciate all the advice & well wishes. I will pop back in soon to wreak some havoc or maybe I should start with minor mayhem while I continue to recover. :P

Oh Man! I'm sorry I missed this thread earlier Ken. I'm glad to hear you are doing better though!
While you are recuperating though, if you find a need for any villages to be burned, I'm sure I could scrape up a few folks here to help, and we can fill in for ya :-)
Get some rest man, and get BETTER!!! :-) |

Back pain is bad! I suffer from Sciatica - have done for several years now. First time it happened was due to a slipped disc - but I have no idea how I got the slipped disc in the first place!. Anyway it was way bad pain, brought tears to my eyes I must admit. Very difficult to do the ordinary day to day stuff you take for granted, like going to the toilet and putting on your socks and sneezing! After that cleared up I was left with numbness all the way down to my toes on my left leg. My calf muscle also twitches all the time like some alien being is trying to escape. Not to bad then for a few years but it hit me again and the second time it was even worse 4 weeks off work, not very nice.
Glad to say I have not had a repeat for a couple of years now. I still have the numbness down my left leg but thats not a problem. Over the counter pain killers are not much help. Co-Codamol on prescrption were very good! Warm baths help - not hot but warm. I also used a TENS machine on the areas and that also helped (TENS - electric currents pass through the area via pads attached to a machine which lets you chose the level)
You have my sympathy!
Edit to add - I have recently started take Glucosamine Sulphate 1000mg twice a day and find that this has helped a lot with aching joints - another bonus of getting old!

I have a very bad back due to a severe car chrash a few years ago, it's been killing me for years, but I went to a Chiropractor a few weeks ago, since my back was in a really bad shape I had to see him 3x a week for 5 weeks, but now my back is almost like it was before the crash, it rarely hurts..
so I reccomend that you find your self a Chiropractor that's close by and if you can't get out then have him come to you, it works a lot better than any drugs, and severe pain usually goes away after the first appointment, then the next appointmnets are to straighten your back and align the bones to keep them from sliding apart. |
