To vote on every picture in a challenge, and comment when moved; or two comment and vote on a minimum of 20%?

Historically I have opted for chosing a challenge and voting on every shot, trying to fit in twenty odd comments. I thought it would be fairest if every shot in a challenge got the wieght of my vote. However it has resulted in my always chosing to vote on the challenge with the least submissions. Now, with so many images submitted per challenge I struggle to find the time to vote for everything. So, now I'm thinking perhaps keep the voting to a minimum and aim to deliver more comments.

Any advice or thoughts?

Paul, it's past midnite so many of the regulars are already in bed, so I'll drop in my 2 cents on this. I dont really get what you mean when you said, "To vote on every picture in a challenge, and comment when moved; or two comment and vote on a minimum of 20%". Is that your personal preference, or your suggestion on revamping the voting rules?

I'd prefer voting on 100% of the pics in any challenge and commenting when I feel the wish. But recently, I've only managed to get past the 20% minumum due to the sometimes huge entry numbers and lack of time/bandwidth. Is there a problem here? I'd say, possibly yes. But as you were saying about voting less, but commenting more - you have to also remember that comments may be viewed as a side extra for many people, and they'd rather have a higher score (vote) than having many comments.

well, I think that the majority of people who need or want comments are the ones with pictures that need improving, seems the really awesome pics get plenty of comments... I'd say more comments and less voting, and also because your comment may be one of 5 to 20 and your vote will be one of 200 to 300

The comment seems to have more impact from how I see it

Just my preference - how to structure my personal voting.

Assuming of course my vote would increase their score. I think I vote higher than average (the photographers seem to), but there is no guarantee that my vote will raise an individuals score.

I agree that those who are most in need of advice get the least comments; unfortunately they also seem to be the least grateful. I used to have a personal policy of commenting on all votes of 1 - 3 (not many per challenge for me) however I found that few of these users ever marked anything as helpful, and often don't stick with the site. I then change dto commenting on all votes of 4 (thinking that these were putting the effort and would appreciate some pointers).

Now I try to comment where I feel I can say something useful. Sadly this isn't as often as I would like.

I agree...make sure you vote on all the ones that stand out to you and if you want your vote to count get that 20%...but if you want to make a bigger impact comment on the photos...sometimes that means more.

that is why currently there is a dedicated thread in the forums suggesting a checkbox that says:

[_] I'm sensitive, please dont leave negative comments

Isn't that a given? Aren't all artists sensitive and only out there seeking approval? :-)

How about a series of checkboxs:

[_] DNMC
[_] OOF
[_] I don't like it.
[_] You suck
[_] A sublime artistic interpretation
[_] Not balanced
[_] Great
[_] etc...

It would sure make commenting easier....

But seriously now.
