I read quite a few comments from people who are disgruntled with the comments they have recieved during voting. Why not solve this problem with a "Vote Only" check box when you submit your shot? That way the people who get upset by comments needn't get any! Vote Only would show up under the shot so no-one would waste their time commenting where it's not wanted. |

Sounds like a good idea however - playing devils advocate - you might get some people who think the "vote only" crowd are a bunch of whinny babies or something and automatically vote them lower.
Just a caution that if you separate people you run the risk of discrimination. |

I like this idea. I also like the idea of making it so that people who complain about their comments in the forums automatically just can't receive any but I'm not holding my breath for that one. ;) |

I can't believe I have to explain myself to you of all people MK... This site is about learning about photography. It's all right there on the about page. I have learned more about photography through commenting on others images than I have by taking my own photographs. To take that element away from new people here just because there is a small group of people that can not handle the fact that someone may have something negative to say about their work is simply not fair. It goes against the whole concept that is DPC...
Or to put it simply,
NO!

Yea, this might be a pretty good idea. I would wonder if it might help improve and encourage people to comment if they know that the photag does or does not want comments on their image. You would instantly know while voting.
I'm all for giving it a try.

Me of all people? I'm not psychic. :P
I don't see the harm in not leaving comments for people who don't want them. And I don't see the value in forcing comments on them in the name of learning. That doesn't strike me as the whole concept that is DPC. It's not like there'd suddenly be a dearth of images to comment on.

If people don't want comments (IMHO) they don't belong here. They can have their very own online portfolio countless places where they can post their photo's and expect people to ooohhh and aaahhh over them. |

Sounds like a good idea to try-run.
So by default, it is "vote only" unless the submitter check the box to allow comments on the photo. |

I didn't mean to upset anyone. I myself love recieving comments. I actually don't think there would be too many people who don't but there are obviously some, going by all the complaining going on in the forums after challenges end. I would rather spend my effort commenting on peoples shots who actually want comments. I don't think it would only be "good" shots either, mostly it's people who are trying to learn that want the comments.
Toocool, I understand your argument about DPC being a place of learning and I agree that commenting is as much a learning tool as receiving comments however I feel comments are wasted on people who really don't want them. Anyway, it's just an idea I don't feel particularly strongly about it. |

Just a thought, it's called DPChallenge, so there will be people in here among us that are here solely for the challenge, and not for the critique? |

How about, propose the check boxes to something like these:
[x] comments will not be read by photographer (default)
[ ] comments appreciated
but the comment box will remain and people can still comment?
But when we come across those who checked the "comments will not be read" then we'd skip commenting (if you want) and comment on photographers who actually reads it?

Simple... they don't have to read the critiques. Case closed.

Personally, I'd like a check box that said "no cheese please" when voting. :P

You're telling that to me? I read all comments left on my photos.
The issue here is, how do you tell those who dont read the forums? [/quote]
Funny that... so do I... and as a rule it doesn't take me long to read that comment :O)

I think the point is that some people would prefer their efforts go towards someone who actually wants to read the critiques. |

I agree with mk. I really don't see why we have to force people to receive comments. I always hear about how the "score" teaching you about mass appeal and you don't need to get comments to learn so why do we feel we have to keep it a requirement that you receive comments even when you don't want any?

I was thinking along the same lines as what mk said when I posted my ideas into this thread. |

Perhaps viewed in a different perspective, one could argue that "Mass Appeal" may not necessarily equate to good photography.
While I am in full agreement with the position that we should not "Force" comments on anyone, I fear that such a box might also give rise to a certain level of "Retribution" by some of the voting public.
Some might view these "Not interested in comments" individuals as being more focused on their own self interests and not DPC as a whole, with the ensuing result being that they might conceivably vote entries of this nature lower.
I could be very wrong, but if such a process is deemed advisable, then I am quite prepared to abide by the decision rendered.
Ray

Should we make the button to ask for no comments shaped like a chicken, or shaped like an ostrich?
I vote Ostrich. :P
