It depends on the camera... My 6.1 MP Nikon fits 268 RAW, 237 RAW+jpg, or 564 Large-Fine JPGs on a 2 GB card. |

I'm not being a smart alec, but why is this such news? I've been using these Kingston 50x CF cards for over a year in both cameras and digital audio recorders and have had good performance and no failures. What am I missing? |

Kingston Elite Pro cards top out around 9Mb per second. These new Extreme cards can hit 40Mb per second. |

Quicker transfer for those rapid fire shooting situations. As more and more cameras have higher megapixels and more shots per second, you are basically buying for the future.

How fast can your camera write to a CF card? You might be paying extra $$$$ to get speed that you can't use. But of course you would be able to let everyone know that you bought the latest model, if that turns you on.

| Even if your camera can't take full advantage of 40MB/sec (it can't), you'll still get better burst performance and faster LCD draws than slower cards, and you'll see a HUGE difference when you download the files to your computer with a fast card reader. |

A much faster card may help the buffer to clear more quickly making your camera capable of longer continuous shooting if it is one that can both write to and from the buffer at the same time. But it probably won't be measurably faster from one shot to the next within the burst. But, as you point out, cameras will likely get faster in the future.

It leaves even the best card readers in the dust.

Ahh good to know. Guess my misfiring synapses were equating 50x to 50mb/s. Have no need for in camera card faster than these, but yeah sure would be nice to have a much faster card when dumping 3 gigs off the flash into the pc. |
