New Canon 70-300
This is due out in August. Other than $500+, what's the major difference between this lens, and their current 70-300 IS lens?
Current Canon 70-300
From what I can see, the new one has a half stop lower available, is physically longer and heavier. I'm not familiar with the "DO" part of the current lens, nor do I know if the glass differs significantly. I'm considering replacing my 70-200 f/4 L, even though it's "L" glass, with IS, as I think the IS outweighs the "L" part in my case. |

those are two separate lenses. All the 70-300 non DO were recalled because of error - I have one.
Big difference is size and diffractive optics. I went for the longer one as I didn't think the DO was worth it and the reviews are not as great as the price.

The "new" lens has been out for a while. (I have one.) I believe the reason bhphoto says it's available in August is because it's on backorder. Also, there's a highly-publicized quality problem with it that Canon is working to fix (related to portrait-mode 300mm images). My copy will be sent to them for repair in a couple of weeks.
With that said, I replaced my 70-200 f4 with this lens, and glad I did - recall notwithstanding... |

| You're just seeing a backorder/recall on a current model. The DO lens is another class (note the green stripe). It likely performs a little better than the non-DO and is considerably smaller. |

If you want to add IS, and are gonna trade in your 70-200/4L, why not get the 70-200/2.8L IS? THAT's a lens for a lifetime...

I had heard that DO is new technology that basically allows for better optics in a smaller package.
My dream of a 10-500mm F2.8 the size of the 50mm f1.8 is coming closer!!!

Umm... because the 70-300IS is very good, and that big 2.8L costs more than a 70-300mm IS + Canon 10-22mm + Tamron 28-75mm + Canon 50mm f/1.8 combined. |

I loved the DO the second I saw it for the size and IS but then choked on the price :-/ The images from this one get mixed [been kind] reviews - mostly due to the OOF areas been strange and the flare. IMO a lot of the bad rep is because of price - in that price range, there are a LOT better options in glass (not with the compact design though). I don't own it (price) but suspect it would get rave reviews if it was around the $600 mark.
I wish Canon would just put out a 70-200f4L with IS [same image quality - or better] and be done with it, like they did with the f2.8 version. I would almost certainly swap my current 70-200f4 and I suspect there would be a line behind me :-) |

Thanks for all the info - very much appreciated!
Yes, Bear, the 70-200 f/2.8 IS would be ideal, but Shannon has a great point about the price, since I also eventually want the 10-22. After all, I'm moving to Europe and figure I'll have to do a landscape or two, or three...
I'll do some more reading and re-evaluate my finances... :-)
Oh, and Dahkota - did you get yours repaired?
