I know that it has been suggested before that the new comments to one's photographs be emailed to the author or otherwise highlighted in the profile page (currently I need to remember the number of comments on my photos in order to detect any new activity).

However, I think that this needs to be approached more broadly. What I would like to see is *dialogues* in photograph discussions. Currently, I, mostly, see monologues: one would leave a comment and walk away. The commenter would not know if the author replied to his comment, unless he goes back to check on the image on his own, so I often feel like I'm talking into a void (although I know that there are some people who come back to check for replies).

Please don't suggest that PM to the commenter could carry this function. IMO it is both inconvenient for the author, and uncourteous to the commenters.

I would also like to see a "You have new comments" indicator on the bio page so people don't have to check their comments list every now and again. Half the time comments on old photos go unnoticed because the photographers are unaware of any new comments...and therefore they don't get ticked as being helpful or not.

Judi, I was trying to say that it would be even better to see a "you have replies to your comments" indicator.

Edited for spelling.

I was about to say what's the point just look at the list. But when I got to your dialogue/monologue part I was quickly persuaded. I've often left comments and wondered whether to check back for possible responses, but this is just not possible not knowing if and when a response will be left.

Often a comment or a response is pretty much just a fart in the wind.

I'm not sure what the best solution is, but I agree that I feel a little confused how I should respond to a wonderful comment on my picture. The best place is on the picture itself, so that others can see the dialogue, but how does the commentor know I responded? I end up not responding as often as I'd like.

hmm.. I always send a thank you PM to whoever comments on my pics (not during voting though) and then I go and try to leave some comments for them... as far as threads, I just keep looking for the little yellow arrow on my last 10 threads posted to part of my profile, I figure if they're older than that... oh well I suppose

but as for me knowing if there's a response to a comment I made on a pic, I guess I just depend on the person to PM me with it...

I could see that being helpful though, a little notification thing on our home page (where we see our current challenge entry stuff), "you have new helpful comment boxes checked," lol

I think clickable links on the Home Page for

New Comments
Replies to Comments

seem to be the most pragmatic and space-conserving solutions suggested so far, as long as it is not too hard to program/code.

We already have a clickable link to (all) comments on our own entries.

Either send Langdon a link to this thread or keep bumping it up until he sees it : )

on the homepage or the profile page? that would be nice.

maybe show the same arrows like the forums (gold & silver) for read & unread?

So it would link to what? A list of new comments since your last visit or to a list of comments that have not been marked as helpful?

I think it's a great idea either way! :)

myspace does it, and they aren't hosting the best-run website around, can't be that hard

I couldn't agree more. In fact, suggested a site improvement that would take care of this quite well -- over two years ago. Not only does it encourage a dialogue instead of monologue, but also encourages others (not just the commenter and receiver) to join in on the conversation.

Maybe some day.
