I just bought a 70-200 AFS VR and this monster barely fits in my Tarmac backpack. When I leave the bag standing up with the lens vertically inside, the massive weight of the lens as well as that of the attached camera body rests on the front element of the lens. My question is: Will the lens suffer any physical damage from the stress of the weight if I leave it like that over extended periods of time?

Also, when I shake the lens around I can hear a very very faint rustling sound. Does this indicate damage, or is it just a natural occurance?

Just leave it in the bag...it'll be fine. Store the bag standing up, sitting down, it doesn't matter.

Heck if you're that worried about it, leave the endcap and cap on, and store it on a shelf sitting on the front cap...or get one of those hard cases with foam inside...but I wouldn't worry about it.
