Challenge: Panorama
Type: Members
Rules: Advanced Editing
Description: Take this opportunity to create your best horizontal panorama.
Special Rules: You may use 1 to 3 image files to create a horizontal panorama. Entered photo must have a 2:1 or greater aspect ratio, but may be no more than 800 pixels wide.
...maybe this could be done as a month long challenge, and possibly allow larger file sizes!

from a couple weeks ago - two images combined - would be hard for me to match this scene. but sounds like a fun challenge.

Rules which specify "exactly" anything tend to cause problems. Do you really want to DQ an excellent photograph because it's only 798 x 396 pixels?
I think the photographer should be able to judge the compromise between image dimensions and quality/compression ratio. I often make an entry 10 or 20 pixels smaller than the maximum in order to save at a higher JPEG quality level.
Why not just specify that the image must have a 2:1 or greater aspect ratio? |

Your exactly right, it was a poorly worded attempt at a larger maximum pixel size for this challenge.

Made changes to the special rules per GeneralE suggestions. Does that sound better?

Yup : )
If there's a question of validation, we (SC) might have to decide if we want all two (or three) images, the first image, or one at random. |

It would be interesting to also have a 360 degree circular (1 row) panorama. Of course, most people would need more than three images.

being that I for the very first time this morning (after owning it for nearly two months) put my 11-18mm on my camera
I think this is an outstanding idea. I have been looking for an excuse all morning to go out and take some landscape shots, But part of me says go out tonight and do the sun setting and then some star trails. perhaps I will do all,
one thing that is for sure, if this becomes a challenge I am definately in.

Ralph, any idea if there are prints available of that shot.
I must have it for my cubicle wall!
And my vote, for what it's worth, is definitely for a panoramic challenge. I love making panoramas. |

no idea - i "stumbled" across it - hosted in Russia .. no idea who or how
BUT I WANT TO KNOW ;)
anyway i could think of it would have serious shadow & registration problems
i haven't picked at it but i imagine there was some serious cloning involved .. (or low flying aircraft ;)

trying to figure out a way this was done
i tried attached the camera on a arm at the end of a painters pole (~9 foot above my head )
this is coverage of a single shot of the 10.5mm fisheye - to replicate the linked image i'm guessing 6-8 images & a zillion of cloning - plus a much more stable platform ..
any ideas ? |

This one was probably done the same way I did this one:
Except I turned mine inside around rather than outside around like the other one.
I love panoramas, but I ususually do 5 to 15 images... mine above was a 11 image panorama stitched together and then painted into a globe using Painter IX. I have another panorama I did that's more of a optical illusion but it's too big to show on here but you can see it here: Wooden Bridge
Panoramas can sure be fun. :D

Here's a "panorama" which was stitched together from two images taken over a year apart : )
