Hello everybody,
I did not post very often lately, too busy...
I finally decided to move to DSLR, I just pick up my new D50 with the kit lense.
The battery is on the charger right now, can't wait to start using it.
I'm planning to order the Sigma 70-300mm APO, my budget is limited. For the price, is it a fair to good lense?
Thanks,

i had that sigma. I would say it is fair. You will need to use a tripod most of the time unless you are in bright bright light. Save a little money and buy a better telephoto lens. In the meantime, buy a good tripod, a shutter release cable and a spare battery. |

The APO version of the Sigma 70-300 is a very good quality and a great value. It's best to shoot it stopped down a bit when approaching the long end to get best sharpness. Here's one of my bookmarks with samples from this lens: //forums.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1034&message=15368965 |

IMO.. (and I own the lens), it is only "very good quality" if you've never seen photos from any other lens.

For the price, the Sigma 70-300 apo is good, take it indoors and you'll be jonesin for an f/2.8 lens in a heartbeat. Outdoors it's great.

Very nice pics, it is just as good (if not better) than what I had before (FZ20). I know that the Sigma is not a "Premium" lens, but for me, it seems that it will do the job well.

Yeah, for the money, it is very good.
Others who say things like 'it is only very good if you haven't seen pics from other lenses' are ignoring the fact that the question is applied to the context of a limited budget.
For the lenses within your budget, it's a flipping nice lens.
If you had a bit more money, you could take the D50 back, and get the 350XT with a 70-200 f/4L.
It would blow it out of the water...
My 80-200L scares me with it's sharpness performance.
Edges, center, wide open, zoomed in, zoomed out. Everything's sharp.
It also costs 4 times more than the Sigma.
Just kidding of course.
I am going to guess however that you are using a D50 because you want a cheap camera to use and get good, decent and very good images.
I think you've got a great cam/lens mix for that. |
