Hi all,

I'm in the beginning stages of considering retiring my venerable Canon 10D body. I'm looking to either buy a used or refurbed 20D or a new 30D.

Obvious issues?

1. The used 20D would be much cheaper, and
2. Have nearly everything the 30D has, other than spot meter and larger LCD.

Used 20D prices range from ~$900 to $1,000. New 30D would set me back about $1,250.

In case anyone was going to suggest it, the 5D is just too far out of my price range.

Thoughts?

Ask yourself, is it worth the extra $250 for a brand-new camera with only a few minor upgrades, considering the kind of photography you do?

If you answer yes, get the 30D. Otherwise, a good used 20D will suite you fine.

I wouldn't spend more than about $850 for a 20D, and not more than $925 for one with a grip. That's USD. I think the 20D is a fine camera for the money, and the 30D doesn't have much to offer over it.

I'd love to find a used 20D with grip for $925. I'd probably buy it today!

My personal opinion would be to go for the 30D if you can stretch your budget that far, maybe you could find a used one. If you update less frequently than at every new offering, it would seem to make sense to go for the the most up to date you can afford. But I'll also say that the 20D is a sturdy camera with a great set of features. Unless it has been abused, you should have no problem with buying a used one.

I would go with the 20D and use the extra $250 to buy a flash? Maybe a canon 430 EX?

You won't need a grip for battery life with the 20D. It will shoot all day and half the night on a charge. Get the grip for it's second shutter button if you shoot a lot in portrait orientation.

I really don't need the extra $$$ for any accessories. Already got a good flash, remote, good set of lenses, etc. I'd like the grip because I do a lot of astro shooting and all those long exposure shots really take a toll on battery life, even the excellent juice of the 20D/30D, methinks. So a grip is in the purchase for sure. Plus, I like the feel of the cam + grip. More badass.

I've never used the 30D but would suggest it might be worth moving to that rather than the 20d (moving from a 20D to 30D is a no brainer and not worth it).

Mind you, I'm in the lucky position of keeping my 20D as a backup and still love using it. If money is no object then the 30D (my only hate with the 20D is that the lcd is so small after using the 1DnMKII)

I would like a grip because you do get twice the battery life, and the extra shutter button, but it also makes the camera a lot easier to hold, plus you can put a hand strap on then. Ebay actually has some good deals for 20D's and you can check fredmiranda.com too. I just bought my 20D, mint, with 5k shutter activations and it was $825 shipped and paypalled.

This has always confused me, if you add a handstrap to the cam you either shoot in only one orientation or don't have a secure grip on your cam (thus negating the two shutter button luxury).

not sure what you mean, I can easily get to the vertical grip while the horizontal strap is on with my 1D. I can also easily use all the buttons that way.
