The weather forecast for my area suggests we'll be getting thunderstorms on and off for the next couple of days.

Anyone have any solid tips on getting good lightning shots?

Not really about the technique itself but be careful of not falling into the same trap many do regarding photographing lightning, fireworks and aurora borealis, to have nothing else in the photo. A photo of a lightingin and nothing else is pretty boooooring IMHO, you need some kind of foreground or setting for it to really pop.

I agree with Larus. That's exactly how I voted in that last Fireworks challenge. Those with great foregrounds/settings got higher votes from me. But just a simple burst of fireworks/lightning in a black sky is boring.

One of the simplest techniques is to set up a nice landscape shot that is beautiful even without lightning in it. Then when the lightning storm arrives, simply set your camera to take 1-2 sec exposures, and just fire off the shutter continuously while the lightning strikes are occuring (focus to infinity or hyperfocal, wide DOF, but not too small on the aperture, otherwise you lose some light from the lightning strikes. F8-F11 should be fine).

Chances are you'll get more than a few shots with lightning in them, and because you've set up a good shot even before the lightning, what you'll have is a great setting with a spectacular bolt of lightning in it.

Great feedback! Thanks a bunch. I'll let you know how it works out.
