I received my new external hard drive and my husband set it up for me last night. I am trying to back up all my original files as well as the files I have edited. (They are backed up to DVDs as well.) My hard drive on my desktop (200gb) is nearly full!
Problem #1
I am using firewire to transfer everything. Every 5-10 minutes, I get an error message and everything stops. The external hard drive window closes and the hard drive drops off my hard drive list. I have to turn it off, then back on again and it reappears on the list. I am having to backup things one folder at a time because of this!
Problem #2
I keep getting a message saying:
"Cannot copy "filename": Data error (cyclic redunduncy check)."
This stops everything and I have to restart each transfer.
Problem #3
I have a couple corrupt files (pictures) that it will not let me delete. Any ideas?
Thanks for any help! I am pulling my hair out doing this. I thought it would be a simple task..LOL |

This problem has been brought up in a thread before. Let me see if I can find it before someone answers.

alot of the hardware manufacturers have relatively helpful hotlines...does yours come with 1800 number to call? I have called linksys for example numerous times to get their help.

Try rebooting in Safe Mode and deleting them.

Justin- I will try that. To get into Safe Mode.....it's f5?? It's been a while, I don't remember...LOL
Faidoi- thanks for looking :)
anmldoc-Ill try that at last resort. For some reason, only 1/2 of the 800 numbers I try from Guam seem to work! That and the time difference make it a pain to call :) |

It may take awhile but try transferring files that are less then 4gb.

It is NTFS file format.
I didn't realize that was a file format (techno dummy here). I found it under properties of the drive.
I've transfered nearly 100GB worth of pics so far and I am only having trouble with a dozen or so files. I may just replace them with the originals backed up to DVD. What a pain. LOL |

here is a link to a bunch of tec answers, You can also call the help desk of the drive manufacture all well. on the photos that will not transfer try opening them in PS then save as to the ext. drive directly
Good luck

Just curious, did safe mode help at all?
