Canon!

Of the two you mention, I think I would go with the Canon 20D. The D1X was a pro model, but it is quite dated.

If you go canon there are rebates til the 15th (but we all know they do this all the time)

Canon Rebates good for purchases up to the 15th of July

I went through this one last night for hours with the father-in-law...

In a nut shell: He don't want to go big yet (retired and on a budget), he shoots wildflowers on nature hikes (so the kit lens is a downer).

So we got him a XT Black Body only for 579.00(after $100 rebate) from B&H and a used (EX+ Condition) Tamron SP 24-135mm 3.5-5.6 Macro from KEH for $245, it will come to @ $850 after rebate and shipping.

First thing to do is go to bestbuy or the likes and pick em all up and see what feels right in your hand... then move forward from there... comfort and feeling comfortable will holding it will help you down the road.

Depends on what you didn't like about the s2 and what features you want?

I think the S2Pro was a really slow machine.
Anyway, if he has existing lens and would like to keep them, then Nikon may be his better choice.

canon! Full frame sensors when you upgrade plus better lenses. I have an xt and think it is a great camera for the money. 20d is old school, so get the xt or 30d. heck get the 5d :)

Andy - this site is very Canon-centric so this is a loaded question.

You have three Nikon lenses already. Unless you want to add the expense of starting over with lenses then you might want to look at the Nikon D70s or the D200. The D200 is close to pro level and is weather sealed. It blows away the Canon 20D and the Nikon
d1x. The D70s, which is less expensive, compares well with the 20D but the 20D is a bigger more solid camera with a few more megapixels.

If you go Canon you will end up spending more money (lenses) than you will with the Nikon D200. My advice would be go with it as it will stay current much longer than the Canon 20D. The D1x is already old technology.

Just my opinion of course.
