Okay, in my life, prior to yesterday, I had witnessed 2 car accidents (luckily have never been in one). Yesterday I managed to be witness to 3 completely seperate auto accidents in less than 4 hours. The first was relatively minor. Car in front of me surged forward on a green faster than the car in front of him, fender bender.
The second was a little more damage, but pretty mild. Car on side street rolled out too far into an oncoming traffic lane and got clipped. I was about a half block behind the car that did the clipping.
The third was just freaky. I was headed home- the two above happened in Grand Junction where I was attending a seminar- and was travelling down a 3 lane section of the highway, in front of me a green pathfinder goes to pass an Xtera (spelling anyone?) suddenly the pathfinder veers right, side swipes the Xtera. Swerves back into the left lane, accelerates and passes the pathfinder then brakes and gets rear ended by the pathfinder.
I had pulled over and stopped when the side swipe happened. I grabbed my first aid kit and headed to the scene. Everyone was fine, the pathfinder driver had a couple of bumps on her head but surprisingly nothing serious.
Coincidently it was the same cop at the 2nd and 3rd accidents. He said to me "Didn't I take a statement from you like 2 hours ago?" I told him, I witnessed one in downtown Grand Junction like 3 and half hours ago.
The thing that got me about the third was the Pathfinder drivers explanation. "...I dropped my lighter and when I reached down to pick it up my cell phone rang. I guess I panicked when I hit him and then he rear ended me....Hold on a second...." Her cell phone rang while talking to the trooper about the accident SHE CAUSED and she stopped to answer it in the middle of his report. I thought he was going to shoot her, she's standing there talking on her cell phone and he's just glaring at her.
Man what a day...And it wasn't even a holiday weekend.

You should be safe to hang out with for a while now. What are the chances that you'll be in the vicinity of another accident!
Talking on the phone while driving should be banned. I've heard statistics that driving while talking on the phone has just about the same accident rate as driving drunk.
I've seen people run red lights, run over curbs, swerve in and out of freeway lanes all while talking on the phone.
Glad you're OK! |

This kind of insanity, plus gas prices, is what has me taking the train to work these days. Of course, I nearly received two broken legs, (or worse), while attempting to walk across the street at a signal yesterday. So walking isn't even safe. Stay alert!

I was kicking myself for not picking up the camera bag on the way out of the house yesterday. The trooper standing there glaring at this woman talking on her cell phone.

Talking on a mobile is now against the law in the UK while in control of a vehicle on public roads. Up to £1000 (About $1800) fine, plus you could get charged with due care and attention type offences too...
Doesn't deter some people though - mostly female... |

thats really funny.
BTW I don't think cellphones cause more accidents than the radio or talking to someone next to you or my crazy kids freaking out in the back seat or smoking in the car or anything that requires attention away from driving. Homer Simpson once said" facts are pointless, they can be used to prove anything" or something like that:) |

Actually, you are incorrect. Smoking doesn't make you drive drunk like cell phones do.

What about talking on the phone while talking to the person next you while lighting a cigerette while yelling at the kids in the back while changing radio stations in the pouring rain? I almost dropped my beer!

It's eeejits like the the Pathfinder driver that drive cell-phone laws. It's *not* talking on a cell phone while driving that's dangerous, it's *how* it is done. There are more significant distractions than cell phones, like eating, putting on makeup, picking up dropped items, conversations with back-seat occupants, ignored drowsiness, the list goes on and on. What we need is a law that provides an extra penalty for causing an accident because of being distracted... O wait, we have one, it's called "inattentive driving." Why we need additional, silly laws, I don't know. |

I agree.
The last accident I got into was because I was distracted by an ambulance. I heard the siren and was looking in my rearview mirror to see if I needed to get out of the way when I hit the person in front of me. Distractions in any form are dangerous. I have a Bluetooth installed car kit and with the voice activated dial and the answer button on the dash it is no more distacting than talking to someone next to me which is still too much sometimes. As far as I'm concerned I am all for headset laws mainly beacuse cell phones are my livelyhood and it just means more money for me:)
