I am presently the owner of 2 canon flashes : 580ex & 550ex. I am looking to buy a third flash for those rare times it might get useful but I am wondering if such a thing as a third flash is really useful. For those of you that own 3 of them, is 2 enough or does the 3rd one come in useful?

Also, do you recomend buying 2 great flashes (580ex) and one that is the older model (550ex), or would it be enough to keep one great one and 2 that a notch lower.

Thanks for your help!

If it's just a slave flash you need, why not a 430EX?

Well, if you do portraits, a third flash could come in quite handy for a background light or hair-light.

In general most good portrait set-ups involve 4 lights. Main, fill, background and hair-light (or kicker). So, yes a 3rd even forth flash can come in quite handy.

Personally I like my Sigma... Comparable bang to the 500 series Canons for less buck!!!

Well they way I was thinking about it is (from the standpoint of somebody looking to start doing weddings professionally) you always need backups. That may or may not be the case for the OP.

Canon 430EX makes a lovely slave unit. With 3 flashes, you're unlikely to be using all of them at max power anyway, and the 430 makes a smaller, lighter package for walkaround flashing in close quarters.

I too was going to recommend the 430... I realize that it's unnecessary though...

What I really wanted to post was that I'm not sure yet if the IR communication system for the Sigma flashes is compatible with using a 580EX as the controller...

anyone?

I am actually into wedding and studio photography and the business is starting to grow (I'm getting more and more clients).

So from the general opinion I get that it's unecessary to get a second 580ex (or even a 550ex) and that 430ex should be sufficient.

Does anyone disagree?
I'm trying to get as many opinions as possible.
Thanx

i'm not sure, as i don't own a 580 : (
but... the 500 super can be triggered by a flash of light, and also has IR channels... just dont know if these are compatible

Right... I would love to know that... If they are compatible, either the 430EX or the 500DG Non-super would be appropriate for this appliation...

Honestly, I'd just stick with the 430EX...

You have explained that you need a powerful flash that is used as a slave.

The power should be quite sufficient and the 430 works perfectly as a slave to the 580.

I think that's the answer...

Yes it is, each Canon redesign is reverse engeneered by Sigma a few months after any re-design, so the current 500 super apes the 580ex pretty well. IR and most of the functions are close enough that either can slave off the other. The interface of the Sigma is inferior, and it is bulkier and less hardy than the 580, but since you can buy two of them for the price of a single Canon it is a question of how much quality you can afford.
