I give out 1 - 3 tens in almost every challenge I vote. Those are MY picks for 1st, 2nd, 3rd. Typically, I'll give out 3 - 5 nines. Those are my also rans - almost but not quite the best, in my opinion, in the challenge (I rate on a curve).

I only give out a 1 once in a while - when the photographer is obviously going for the brown. In a blatent attempt, why should I deny them? :) Otherwise, my minumum is 2 (rarely given). For me, there really aren't many shots that merit a 1 or 2. I can find a redeeming quality in 99.5% of what is submitted...

I was wondering why you always say I'm number one :-P

Nahhh, you're number two... you have to try harder ;)

1 non-human, no nudity.
2 male, no nudity
3 male, full nude
4 female no nudity
5 female, suggests nudity, but doesn't show enough to prove it
6 female, clothed, but tempting
7 female, skantly clad
8 female, bikini shot, underwear, etc
9 female, fully nude but lighting distracts from full effect of the nudity
10 female, in-your-face nudity ... more than likely shot by DrJones :-)

Soory, but that's how I'm voting from now on and you can't change my mind :-P

Edit to add: Also a 10 for any nude self-portrait of Judi :-)

this doesn't take into account non-human nudity. remember that dog in the 30-second challenge???

Special cases will be handled on a per-photo basis. :-)

I see that many voters score low a photo that does not meet the challenge... Just out of curiosity, do you feel there are varying degrees of DMNC?

For example:
In a challenge called "Cars" somebody shoots a motorcycle. You deduct one or two points.
In the same challenge somebody shoots a rubber duck. You score them a 1 or 2.

Is this the way it works? Or if you don't feel it perfectly meets the challenge that automatically scores them low?

The way I handle the subject of DNMC is if the challenge topic is not present AT ALL in the photo, it's DNMC and I'll usually give a 3 or so. If the photo has at least a hint of the challenge topic, even if just borderline, I'll vote as if it meets the challenge.

Just joined the site so this is an enlightening thread. To date, using your examples I vote like this

Car challenge and someone shoots a motorcycle or a duck - 1. If it's a great photo, a 3 tops.

This '10' challenge was a tough one I guess (else I'm being overly mean?). Shots of 9 of something with a witty caption still got a 1 or 2. Shots of some kid with a caption saying the kid is 10 yr old - still a 1 or 2. I guess it's largely a matter of relevance to the challenge for me. I could take a picture of a stone and claim in the caption it weighs 10kg - to me that is using the caption to make up for a lack of imagination in meeting the challenge specs.

What a great find this site has been though. Many wonderful photos, articles and what seems to be a pleasant group of participants.

Dang, you're interpreting this thread extremely harshly.

Hrm, could be. Next one I'll take a broader view.

Just browsed through some ribbon winner pics, and I am amazed!Lots of pictures received 2's and 3's and even an ocasionly 1 and they are ribbon winners. Well ok if I don't like it I give it a 4 or so, and if it is out of focus, totaly blurry, too small or what ever I'll give it a 1, 2 or 3, but always I give a reason.

I browsed the ribbon pics because I was wondering if the people who give 1's, 2's and 3's give a reason. And nope, just giving low rates.

I have, offcourse, 1's, 2's and 3's, but no reason.... Just hate those types.... I guess it's just to tic off people or something liuke that.

Come on be a man/woman, if you give a 1,2 or 3 give a reason. I think a picture that's technicaly is allright and in focus etc. deserves at least a 4... for efford.

how could we figure out who has the highest and lowest average vote cast? i think it would be neat to see a list.

now i understand people give 1' coz there is a liitle bit blood in
the shot

its o.k.. i understand some people dont vote as they really think..

otherwise.. how do you explain that a naked lady has som many 10 (by men) and so many 1 (bye jealous women)

the point is... its fine... just dont push it.. a 5 both bad case will be fine

I used to never give 1's, 2's or 3's because I didn't feel I had the expertise or knowledge to be that judgmental. Guess what??? I've changed. ;~p

As I've grown and learned, I'm seeing more and more things that I find unattractive, blurred, snapshottish, etc, that I might have been a bit more leniant of before. But it seems to me lately, I'm seeing alot more just plain "bad" photos. Am I becoming jaded? Am I turning into an old crone?

I hate it, but for about the past 6 months, I've noticed a downward slide in the overall quality, and I do specify OVERALL. There are still some brilliant images and some that are awe inspiring, but I see soooooo many lame "I was driving by and just snapped this with my disposable camera" shots. Should I go on hiatus and get a new set of eyes??

Another problem is the number of entries now. As fresh and objective as I try to be, even not doing it all in one or two days, I just tire of some of the entries when so many are the same.

(ducking for the flying tomatoes and cabbages headed my way)

I have given low scores for naked women for reasons that definitely were not jealousy. It does happen. I don't think I've voted a 1, however - so maybe if you have someone that does vote because they are jealous, their jealousy might count for less of the "1" then you might think.

edit: I could be completely wrong. And I like the balanced viewpoint you gave, with mentioning the 10s as well. :-)

edit edit: And I do agree with your basic point - I think people do sometimes let things influence voting that maybe shouldn't influence it.

I think I am done editing/clarifying now. :)

edit: Nope!

I do give out ones (rarely)- just not sure I've done that with a naked woman picture.

I really hope I'm done now.

I give out a few ones or twos every now and then (very few). But after being here for over two years I realized while voting it should be just as hard (or easy) to give out a 1-2-3-4 vote as it is a 7-8-9-10 vote.
