I can now read the problematic drive but,
it's only 5.6G and it had to be 30G. It shows me there are 1.smth G available but I can not navigate through the other 5.smth.
I am getting confused. I run the cmd in dos it shows me a 5.smth G partition but nothing about the rest. Right now I am running the pc inspector (thank you kirbik) and seems that can find some files. I am still hoping.

One more time thank you guys.

Edit: Yeap! Files are showing up but I don't have the 20G+ to store them. Hmmm

No I don't. One more problem is that this software does not have a RAW recovery option. I'll leave it like this right now and try again tomorrow morning at work. I have a PC with plenty of space there and I'll try to ask for some profesional help.
Anyways good lesson learnt.
Thank you.

Hrm. Picked up a USB/Firewire DVD burner the other day and I am blown away by how well it works... 4.5 GB burned in 12 minutes...

Zing!

Of course DVD isn't permanent or without problems either...

Hope all goes well at work tomorrow.

Things are not working fine. I run the software kirbik recommended and it's working fine only that recovers files from that 5G I can read from the demaged partition. Those files are files I have erased long time ago.The scan for that 5G took about 9 hours.
There is around 15G I can not find/see.
I had taken out the HDD from the case, cleaned the contacts, put it back. Nothing.
I checked here in Hong Kong some profesional service and the price is out of my league - equiv. of USD250.

Any other ideas what could be done.

I resume: out of a 40G HHD that initially had 2 partitions 30G and 10G i can see the 10G partition like it was before and 5G of the other one. Out of these 5G only 10M are browseable. The rest was scaned with smart recover from PC Inspector and came out (so far as the drive is still scaned)with a little more then 1G of old files.

Thanks!

Sorry man, this went over my head a little while ago... I'll provide a bump though...

I did find this link that does have a number of links a few pages down for some additional freeware hard disk recovery programs as well as some advice...

It's a site that I got from sourceforge.net... A highly useful and generally reputable source for good useful freeware apps...

Give it a read...

There are a couple of generic hard disk recovery programs mentioned there...

Hey,

Thanks a lot. I'll give it a read. Maybe I can come out with something.
Thanks!

Ugh. Sounds like PC Inspector doesn't know to look outside the bounds of defined partitions. You really have three options:
1.) Reset the partition boundary to where it should be, and re-run the recovery software
2.) Try a different recovery software product
3.) Spring for the professional recovery service

If you try option one, don't reformat after resetting the partition boundary. That should leave any data on the disk. Then re-run the recovery software. You can reset the partition boundaries through the Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Disk Management dialog in WinXP, or using third-party tools like Partition Magic.

To add to kirbic's advice, try this tool;

//www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk

Be really really careful that it's the partitions on the external drive you're scanning, and not your internal C: drive! :)

I will.

Thanks guys

Thank you jhonan.
I run the testdisk and it showed the physical size of the HDD 40G. Even though the partition was still odd I run the test and it came up with over 4000 files of files (more then 30G). They are all renamed and some of them are doubles. I checked the exif and the information is still there (camera, camera owner, iso, capture date - so I can browse easily etc).

I saved them on a work computer and tomorrow I'll go through them to see if everything is there (at a first glance it looked like).

The partition ar still odd as I mentioned so I did not touch anything. I'll wait to check the files first.

Thank you guys one more time. I feel released and I start saving fir an external DVD burner (the CD burner on my laptop won't do it)

I'll keep you updated. Maybe others will also learn a lesson on backing up. I did!

Cheers

Edit: I remeber that I browsed the device with ACDsee and oddly there were some files I deleted that I couldn't see them in XP. Any clues?

Sorry no idea about the ACDSee thing... If you want, I can give you my sister's email and she can talk to you about it, but she's in Vietnam for a few weeks without the net...

She worked on the beta testing team for ACDSee a few years back...

Really glad that you got some results...

PS. I picked up a DVD burner plus enclosure the other day for like 75/80 bucks US...

I got an enclosure which allows USB 2 and Firewire and also can accept any drive... I like that because I might want to use it for an HD later or upgrade to a bigger drive later... or possibly might need to replace the drive a week after the warranty runs out...
