One last thought - - Are you sure it isn't something else causing the vision impairment? ;-) |

Have you looked at opthalmic migrains? I get those sometimes and the symptoms sound very much like what you describe.

Seeing as everything we consume has a pH higher than 1-2, EVERYTHING works to neutralize stomach acid by diluting it.
This is from an article in the Archives of Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine.
"It is our opinion that the bulk of the available evidence indicates a probable relationship between carbonated beverage consumption and increased fracture risk. The ingredients of cola soft drinks most frequently blamed for the mentioned adverse effects have been phosphoric acid and caffeine; however, the fact that an association between increased risk for bone fractures and intake of noncola beverages has also been reported 1, 3 suggests that the pathogenic mechanism may be related to other components, such as carbohydrates, or to the displacement of certain nutrients from the diet."
Other studies made the postulation that increased cola consumption let to decreased milk intake and that was the true reason for the turnover of bone.

also from Cocacola site:
"Rumor: The acidity of cola drinks is strong enough to dissolve teeth and bones
Our Response: Almost all foods naturally contain a small amount of acid, including fruit juices, buttermilk, and soft drinks. In fact, cranberries, lemons and limes are examples of fruits that are more acidic than Coca-Cola. Acids, such as phosphoric and citric acid, add a pleasant tartness to a beverage. Phosphoric acid provides phosphorus which is an essential element of bones and tissues. None of these foods are acidic enough to harm our body tissues -- our own natural stomach acid is stronger.
Soaking something in a soft drink or rubbing something with a cloth soaked in a soft drink is not at all like drinking a soft drink. People don't hold soft drinks in their mouths for long periods of time, or rub their teeth with fabric soaked in soft drinks, so it doesn't make sense to extend these possible affects to normal use of the product. Because our teeth are constantly bathed by saliva, which helps buffer the effects of acids from foods and beverages, the effect on tooth enamel is greatly reduced. In fact, the acids in most foods are neutralized to a large degree by the saliva in the mouth long before they reach the stomach."

I'm not sure, never heard of that term. Did a quick google and they seem to have some similar symptoms, but different causes.

I strive to keep my weight in control, because diabetes runs in my mom's side of the family. My grandmother died last year from complications with her diabetes. Soooo, I'm very aware that my sugar intake should be kept in check.
However, I've quit taking in aspartane, and actually feel a lot better than I had been feeling, which could be a placebo effect, but none-the-less, I feel better :-)

Glad to hear it! I was wondering how you've been.
Have you quit soda altogether?
Have you discussed the possibility of being hypoglycaemic with your doctor? With the diabetes in your family, you are at risk. It's really hard to diagnose, BTW. But the symptoms you describe are indicators. |

ok, Im sorry but this is REALLY bothering me. Just because something is synthetic ("unnatural") doesnt make it dangerous!! And, what is even worse is that people assume things that ARE natural are fine!! Chemistry doesn't work that way!! Yes, there are some synthetical chemicals that can hurt you, but there are many that are absolutely fine! What's more is that there are many many natural substances that can hurt our bodies significantly.
PLEASE- just because something is "natural" don't assume it is safe. Whether it is natural or unnatural... it really makes no difference. The chemistry of every substance has its own interactions- the source of such a chemical is irrelevant.

My own experience with Aspartame was that I was drinking several diet drinks every day, and my health got worse and worse....heart irregularities, panic attacks and anxiety, weight gain, aches and pains, eye irritation, memory and focus problems...list goes on and on.
When the panic and anxiety got really bad, someone suggested I get off the aspartame. I did, and many of the symptoms began to disappear immediately, others took some time. One of the worst poisons to ever make it into the food chain.

Couldn't all those symptoms be explained by caffeine just as easily?

There are lots of yucky ingredients in soda. I'm curious about the acid?
From my experience diet and regular sodas make me feel terrible. As I said before, I feel many times better since I cut them out. |

I wasn't having any caffeine at the time. And I"m an espresso importer now so if it was caffeine that was making me sick, I'd surely be dead at this point.
As soon as I got off the aspartame, my health came back. It wasn't just nervousness, there was a list of symptoms a mile long. The stuff is bad news.
I screwed that up, I was supposed to be quoting DrAchoo :-(

I'm not saying that aspartame isn't bad. Only that I don't believe it to be solely responsible for my problems; and I'd hate for someone to overlook the possibility of having something else wrong, because those symptoms fit a lot of serious ailments.
Personally I'm an aspartame "conspiracy theorist". I believe that our government and big business are way too cozy, at our expense. Aspartame isn't the whole story. Some diet sodas even turn into benzene under the right circumstances.
Edit to correct misinformation.
