I'm planning to get a softbox, to go with my strobe flash unit. It's only a 160WS, so I'd like to know what size softbox is appropriate, for head/shoulder portraits, and perhaps bigger portraits, if this slightly weaker flash unit will cope.
Someone said I should not get bigger than a 23" softbox for that. Does that sound right? Will I make a mistake if I buy a larger softbox? |

I dunno, but I would suggest the largest softbox you can afford. I would love to have a 6' softbox as it would make the most awesome portraits! Both of mine are only about 36" though.
The one thing is the low power on your strobe. That may be the reason for recommending a smaller softbox. But I think you can still go larger than 23".
Just remember this: The smaller the softbox is, the closer you'll need to put it to the subject in order to keep the light soft. (as the distance increases, the softbox turns into a point source of light and the harshness of the shadows increase)
So... for a 23" softbox, to keep maximum softness you only want your softbox 23" away - which may be unrealistic (and most people probably wouldn't go that close anyway). I would still consider it soft from about 36-48".
