Hi I have a EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM and the lens hood EW-78BII. I'm thinking about getting a polarize filter (72mm) for this lens. However in the lens manual (page E-10) it says a polarizing filter cannot be used while the hood is attached. I don't see any reason why I can't. What they have in the manual is really vague. Can I attach both at the same time (this is what I want), or will it affect the quality of my pictures if I use both? The manual doesn't say anything...Please help me out..Thanks a lot everyone, I really appriciate your help. |

Have you tried attaching the filter, then the hood then tried to adjust the polarizer?
I haven't tried putting the hood on wilst the filter is attached but it may not fit. |

It works just fine. The problem is you have to stick your fingers inside the hood to twist the polarizer around. Pain in the ass but it works (i.e. filter and hood attached).

A polarizer filter requires that you spin the filter to get the effect. When you have a lens hood on it will probably not allow you to spin it. Some lens hoods comes with a removable section that will allow you to spin the filter.

Yeah, that lens doesn't have that feature but you can still spin it around with the hood attached but you have to stick your finger inside the hood to do it. After some practice you can do it while looking through the viewfinder!

Hi again, thanks for all your help so far. I really don't understand the part when you guys say "A polarizer filter requires that you spin the filter to get the effect" I thought I could just attach a circular polarizing filter on the lens permanently. I didn't know that I have to adjust it to get the effect like reducing reflections. Though it's really easy to remove the hood, it's true that it's a pain on the butt to remove the hood and adjust the filter every time I want to take shot
Thanks for all the help again. |
