Tourist info for Zuid Holland
The idea to visit the Rembrandt celebrations is a good one. I have been to the try-out of the new and excellent 'Rembrandt the Musical' this saturday (they are now moving it to Amsterdam and it is in Dutch only).
On the linked site you'll find a Rembrandt link in the top bar which shows Rembrand festivities and exhibitions in each town.
Also well worth a visit imo is Delft, the hometown of Johannes Vermeer. Still a lot of old buildings.
Kinderdijk? A World Heritage site with windmills.
FYI traffic around Utrecht is hell in the morning because of roadwork.

That's a crazy amount of $$$ to lay down...ouch!!! My credit card is maxed-out and I cancelled it because the charges showed an irregularity. So no activity until I get a new card. |

Really appreciate this information, so much so that you can be forgiven for your views on English beer! :-)
Looks as though I will need to do some thinking but Delft is very tempting as it somewhere I have always wanted to visit. I did some work for Siemens Nixdorf in Vianen about 8 years back so I managed to get to Utrecht but never Delft.
Maybe I could visit Lieden on the way back as my ferry is not until 16:00 on the Monday afternoon.
This is adding to the whole fun element of the GTG but I think I will needs more SD cards and batteries!
Thanks again...

I'll get a couple of bottles of Russian beer for you to try, pretty outstanding stuff believe me! As for the best beer in the world I couldn't tell you, it all tastes pretty similar to me, and after the 4th bottle I don't really care where it is from anyway :) |

An English variant is rum in cider, called Nelson's Blood in some parts. I call it "fall over liquid" especially when it is a shot of rum per half pint of cider...
But vodka in beer - intriguing but I think we have to agree with Freudian-like analysis here:
I would rather have a full bottle in front of me than a full frontal lobotomy

PS was wrong about the football too - sigh |

@obsidian: If you have time left, you could visit the beach in The Hague/Den Haag. I live there. The Hague is not far from Leiden and Delft. Most tourists prefer Scheveningen, I prefer Kijkduin. It's less crowded than Scheveningen and the coast is more beautiful with the dunes.
Delft is certainly worth visiting.
By the way, I could use some vodka now. |

10 days and counting....
according to this thread I think most participants are going there to get drunk, not learn something about photography...
unfortunately I don't get drunk, havn't for the past 6 years, I do however enjoy 1 beer sometimes 2 ,but never more ;)
I do like photography though, and that's the reason I'm going ;) and to meet some great photograpers...
how about you ?

Dan, I'm with you.
I also enjoy a beer or two, but as I get older I find my alcohol tollerence has diminished substantially. If I go over my limit of a couple of beers, or start mixing things, I can write off the next day due to a hangover. Maybe it's a blessing as I have no chance of becoming an alcoholic!
I'm packing a pack of strong headache pills when I come just in case I forget my disability. |

I'm certain the photographic side of this event will take precedent first and foremost and will even be front and center during the social side of things...beer (vodka) and all. |

Good thing for me is that I am likely to be a designated driver, ferrying folk from the studio to the dinner venue and then back again. As I do not drink and drive, this gets easy.
Mind you, it is interesting to re-encounter the "joys" of an earlier life, when large quantities of alcohol were consumed, revelry had, and the next day taken on with the determination of youth. Nowadays, a couple of beers (about three actually) and I am totally unable to revel in anything other than a very blurred view of the location I am inhabiting at the time and the next day reminds me just what the effects of dehydration can be!
So it is the photography that counts, especially those candid shots that seem to embarrass those in the frame - just kidding.

And here we where woried that there wouldn't be enough drivers ;)
I too am a driver, have to drive back from Muenster to Gary and Nasti's house, no problem for me, I dont drink.
Well sometimes I do, but not when I am driving...

Quite frankly the technical aspects of the weekend are almost irrelevant to me. What I don't already know I can learn from a book if I really want to know it. I'm far more interested in the creative and practical sides of the event. I want to gain an appreciation for who's behind the camera, not what's inside it. In my opinion, photography is an art, not a science; understanding the artist leads to an understanding of the art.
and i only drink to make other people more interesting. and to make myself more attractive. |

ROFLMAO
delightfully put
as to art, science and photography...
There is much to be gained by watching the experts, learning from them and then putting what you have learnt into practice. Creativity cannot be learnt but it can be observed. So watching all of you guys at work over the weekend will be an education for me in so many ways as watching the way people approach their task, their body language, posture and interaction with the subject and the environment and the feeling which is put into it speaks volumes.
On the other hand I am an engineer and scientist by training and profession so I may well end up not seeing what I ought :-)
