These are the shots that made it into the paper last night. I would like to thank everyone for the great advice, especially Skip. Unfortunately the guy missed the record by almost 4 seconds. It was a great racethough.
I showed up early and triple checked everything and still managed to bungle the 3 attempts of getting him actually running. My first attempt was my fault. Bad choice on focusing. The second attempt some egghead fan jumped out in front of my shot and the third shot about 60 eggehead fans decided to run on the the track to cheer him on. Didn't see that one coming.
Any way he missed it by almost 4 seconds so I really didn't miss much. I had MAJOR trouble after the match. I had staked out a Starbucks a couple of blocks away and everything was fine 2 hours before the match. Murphy (Murphys Law) decided to stop by after the match and crash the Starbucks server. With minutes to go I raced a few miles to another Starbucks and managed to get them in before print.
I woke up this morning and found several new grey hairs where there were none yesterday. Any way I thought I would post the site so you could all see my attempt at greatness. I haven't heard from Sports Illustrated yet. Hahaha. I did however manage to make a contact with a writer for a running magazine that was there. He may be interested in some of the shots I had. Well here is the site.

nice work, nick! your story is a great example of just how this type of work is not automatic. people really take for granted just how much effort is required to get the shots. if it's any consolation, next time the opportunity arises, at least you'll know first hand what to expect. |
