I've just about had it with Windows. For the whole weekend now I've been trying to get my new camcorder connected via USB. It worked last week, I didn't change anything (of course there's no guarantee that 'windows update' didn't change something behind my back). And now its stopped working.
To make matters worse, as soon as I plug the camcorder in, the PC reboots - no warning, no nothing. I've done all the usual things, uninstalled drivers, downloaded latest drivers from Sony etc.
This is sooooooo frustrating. Okay, that's that off my chest. Now, I need some sympathy.
Mac users - please reassure me that when I get my Macbook I can leave my 20 years of Windows hell behind me? - I've wasted too much of my life sorting out Windows crap. |

...Hmmmm... Windows served you 20 years and you get rid of it, because Mac is better (you think).Good or bad, Windows is the best thing happened to us since 1980s, you and other Mac lovers could think other way (no disrespect to Mac, could be better product but I don't care).
I rather follow someone's product who is steady than a crazy daily dream chaser.
I am really sick and tired of hearing Windows bashing daily bases. You like your apple, go for it, but go without leaving any dirt... we Windows users can handle our problems, don't need others to yell what they think.
there, now I feel better too :) |

| does you handycam support firewire? If so, connect that sucker using that and I think you would be happy. |

Like boomtap said, try out the firewire option. As for the pc rebooting, what happens when you boot with the camcorder plugged in? You can also make it so that Windows Update doesn't do anything without your approval.

Oh! And I just solved my problem. I thought long and hard about any changes I'd made in the past few days, and YES! I'd connected my printer!
WinXP: "Oh no! He has a printer *and* and camcorder connected... at the SAME TIME! Help! How can I handle this? .... okay... reboot...."
Crack open the champagne.

Yes, it does. And my PC has a firewire socket on the front as well.
So, I got myself a firewire cable last week and plugged it in. And nothing. Three hours later I discovered there is no firewire on the motherboard! (even though there's firewire on the case, all cabled up)... The Macbook has firewire, right? :)

Okay, perhaps this post should have been in 'rant' - But as a Windows software developer, I've been to DLL hell and back, and know the registry back-to-front. So I often wonder how the average home user has any hope of solving hardware/software problems like this. How many PCs are sitting gathering dust in the corner because of some problem with a driver, or a bad update, or a trojan?
I'm willing to give something else a try. And hey, if I don't like it, I can always come running back to MS with my tail between my legs.
