Ok I'm about to go sailing for 6 months instead of going back to college. Cool enough? Well I'm heading from San Diego to the Bahama's via the Panama Canal. I am ripping every piece of productive information from this site and it's community as fast as I can and I WILL be coming back from this trip with ridiculous amounts of pictures, so!

I need several items and a LOT OF ADVICE. Firstly and inventory:

(peruse my profile for my camera and lenses, note: 18-70 was borrowed, i do not own)

1x EL3 batt
0x Charger (lost it in the move out from my dorm somehow :( )
1x Charger Cable.... (again, wtf)
1x UV filter for the 18-50
1x 1GB Ultra II SD card
1x 256MB stock SD card
1x heavy camera bag for body and two lenses (no brand visible for the safety sake)
1x LowePro bag for body and lens

I might have a few pieces more here or there, but this is the gist of what I'm starting out with. On the front of lenses I think I will do fine with my two, BUT asap I need a UV filter for my baby (120mm). I've heard salt spray is the bane of lenses, but I've also known many a sailing photographers, so I need your input.

ASAP as well I need a charger. I haven't used my D50 since I borrowed a charger from a friend, so it has a full charge now. As well I should think of getting a second battery. Question on that. The EL3e is the D70 stock battery and I've heard it can go in the D50 and provides a longer charge. I need affirmation on that.

WATERPROOFING. Firstly waterproofing while stowed on the boat (like a waterproof sack) then general tips for how to transport and operate it above deck and in ports, etc. Need specific ideas if you can about stowing techniques though.

FINALLY. Any tips in general on carrying an expensive camera overseas? Customs BS, anti-theft maneuvers, avoiding damage, etc. AND the more specific about purchasing the better (specific models as opposed to brands or links to good deals on sites)

I thank anyone who responds to this with all my heart. This trip will be a huge learning experience lifewise and I'd love it if my camera and I came back in one piece (especially if I come back with mindblowing photos :)).

Laptop. I recently went to Japan for about 10 days and took almost 50gb of pictures. I don't own a laptop but it would have been nice to have one to get rid of bad photos before getting home.

Thanks for reminding me. I do have a laptop. I can edit, etc. and I have 60GB. If that isn't enough I'll ask one of my friends to host my linux box back running an ftp server in Chapel Hill with a 350GBs on it.

Hi Jay;
I have been traveling extensively for the last few years, also aboard a vessel. Lessons I have learned...
1) For security, I keep a cheap backpack to carry the camera and selected lenses in. I have found, at least in Europe, almost everybody, regardless of age, walks around with a backpack, so it fits right in.
2) For sure bring the laptop, but also invest in an external hard drive. I actually started this some years ago, and keep everything important backed up seperately. My laptop and the external drive never travel together either, at least when I'm flying or "train"-ing.
3) For stowage aboard, if you have the room for it, consider investing in a Pelican case. These are waterproof, and virtually indestructable. Hell, use it for a liferaft if need be.
4) As far as use on deck and such, if the weather's nice, (all us sailors want great weather...) I have had no problems in a year and a half with my Canon being on deck offshore. If the weather goes to crap, (and it will, I promise...it just does that...)you might want to consider having a small point and shoot with an underwater housing. The housings for DSLR's are ridiculously priced.
5) Security for me has never been a huge issue. Do be aware of your surroundings, and what's going on around you, but that holds true whether you are carrying a camera or not. I have never had any customs trouble bringing my stuff into the country, but make sure everything is out of the boxes. If you have equipment still boxed up, they may try to ding you for impoting it, and charge you import duty, which can get expensive.
That's about all I can think of at the moment, if you have any other questions, feel free to PM me, and I will help any way I can. Good luck and have fun!
