I'm so jazzed. It all came in pieces so I have a bit of a job figuring out how to put it all together ( No instructions, not even a put slot a into slot z and merge with tab w LOL) Backdrop support and backdrops arrive tomorrow, and I have 23 daycares waiting for me to say I am open. (It helps business when you do the webwork for a daycare association) Going to practice with the new setup for a few weeks. I want to be comfortable using it.
Anyone have suggestions for lighting setup and backdrop. These will all be children between birth and 13 yrs. I hoping for body and head shots. I have no real clue what I am doing atm so any help would be greatly appreciated. Have props, costumes, you kname it. Ideas are all here on what to do with the kids for cute shots but thats about it. |

whoa, umm. Dang, 23 day cares, that's like, what? 2300 children? And how many poses?
You can do 45/45 degrees front and then a hairlight. Pretty flat lighting.
Try 45 one way (right/left), frontal fill at 50% of the 45, and a background fill spot behind the subject.
Or, 90/90, with one side at half or 1/4 power for a dramatic shadowy effect, no hair of BG light, black BG.
Another thing I'm trying because I'm weird, is to do "natural" lighting bounce off of the cieling if it's white and low enough. Makes it look like you just took the picture in lamplight if you do it right.
Does the D70s have a synch port? If not, an SB-800 flash will have one. It came with synch cords, right? I don't like to used the on-camera flash for strobes that can sense the flash, it messes the fill light up, and doesn't always synch right.
It all depends on what kind of space you have in the daycares though. And how it is set up. Are they sending out flyers to the parents? Order forms? Ordering website? I assume you can make one, but it might be easier to pick a lab that will do the gruntwork for you, like Shutterfly, Smugmug, candid2000, and I think Mpix has a pro version. Galleries for each parent, or one for each daycare, or just one?
Wow, I would love to have gotten a job like this.
Have you though about pricing? Shopped around with the competition?

Thanks for the imput. THe lighting came with a sinc that goes on the top of the camera, radio wave something or other lol. These are small family daycares so average 13-16 kids each, and as for pricing.... I dontknow, low I think till i get better, help me build a client base? Soon as I get some shots I'll post for input. I was thinking of using Mpix, I've heard great things.
The thing is, I have clients before I really have a business. I do the website for the association, and my mother is the president, she told everyone so the 23 are word of mouth. If I do well enough with them ill send the flyers out too all of the daycares. Then ill really be nuts. I'm not complaining but I would have at least liked to get my business going before I got work lol. But I am not in a time frame where I have to start taking pics before I want to. |
