Leaving for vacation tomorrow which will take us among other places through Las Vegas. I read a press release that said they will be setting up firework checkpoints on the roads from Las Vegas and Pahrump. The SO already put the kibosh on the whole buying fun fireworks while we we're there but I'd still like to avoid any checkpoint related traffic backups on the way to our final destination. Any locals have recommendations about which routes would be quickest?

That's a bit of a predicament... Check out //www.pe.com/localnews/inland/stories/PE_News_Local_D_fireworks26.1e0bc2d.html for more details. With the 15 and the 127 having checkpoints outside of Baker, that cuts off your two main routes. If you're really that worried about the checkpoints slowing things down, about the only other route that comes to mind is taking the 95 from Vegas south all the way to the 40 in Needles. Then you could take the 40 West over to the 15, south of the checkpoints. Of course, that detour might actually take longer than sitting through the damn checkpoints... ;)

Thanks for the link to the article. Interesting reading to say the least. Glad we already decided not to stop. Thinking about the buy one get two free coupons I have makes me really wonder about how much that guy who said he bought $1,000 worth actually had in his SUV. Personal use, yeah right.

In many trips through the desert I've learned it's always better to keep moving even if it's longer than to sit still for any length of time. Still though, all the way out to Needles seems like overkill.

In years past we would have already been through the area by now so we wouldn't have to think about checkpoints. Maybe I'll try to convince her to leave Las Vegas early in the morning when there will be less traffic in general. Just don't want to drive through the high desert at night.

The press release I saw ( (as well as the PE article) seem to state the checkpoint is only on route 127, not Interstate 15. It makes sense since that is the easiest route from Pahrump, where the fireworks are sold. So it's quite possible that the only stop you'll have on I-15 from Las Vegas is the agricultural checkpoint (near Yermo). (Traffic conditions will force other stops, of course.)

But definitely try to schedule desert driving for the cooler hours. And always carry plenty of water when driving through the desert!

Decisions, decisions. I've hit bad traffic at the ag checkpoint a couple of times. Wasn't fun. I have a road kit in the truck which includes a 5gal water container. We're good to go I think.
